Operation Prainha-Grumari Restoration begins with inspection and guidance for visitors to the area

Rio City Hall agents began an operation to combat irregularities and public disorder in the early hours of Saturday morning (23/01) in Prainha and Grumari, in the West Zone of the capital. The work was carried out by the Departments of the Environment and Public Order (SEOP), the Municipal Guard, CET-Rio and the Barra Subprefecture.

New signage showed visitors how full the sanctuary parking lots were. If 800 spaces were filled (600 in Grumari and 200 in Prainha), a gate would be closed, preventing cars from entering. This measure could be implemented on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, starting at 8 am. The signage operation is the responsibility of the Municipal Guard, guided by the park managers.

The municipal secretary of the Environment, Eduardo Cavaliere, highlighted the special character of Prainha and Grumari, which have been protected by conservation units for 22 years. He added that these areas have suffered greatly due to uses that are incompatible with conservation. The region has almost 270 species of birds and a significant presence of species that are endemic to the Atlantic Forest (which only occur in that area) or are threatened with extinction.

The Prainha-Grumari Restoration operation this Saturday had the participation of 16 traffic agents from the City Hall, the Municipal Guard and CET-Rio, in four cars and four motorcycles, who worked to maintain fluidity, monitor and provide information about the diversion to visitors.

The City Hall Operations Center (COR) monitored the entire area surrounding the closed area and the diversions set up using cameras.
