Parque Madureira gains swing adapted for new leisure area with accessibility

The Rio City Hall, through the Special Secretariat for Tourism and Olympic Legacy (Seturleo), announces that Madureira Park will have a swing adapted for wheelchair users as of this Wednesday, October 07th. The toy, the first in the leisure area with accessibility, was purchased and donated by students from Pensi school, Madureira unit, and is part of the Special Park project, also developed by the students.

– More than just the right to come and go, accessibility ensures safety and physical integrity for people with special needs and reduced mobility, even during leisure and relaxation times. This student project contributes greatly to a more pluralistic world view, where everyone can enjoy the same environments – highlights the Special Secretary for Tourism and Olympic Legacy, Camila Sousa.

The Special Park project, which began in the Life Intelligence Laboratory (LIV) classes in April 2019, was conceived by nine students, guided by Professor Debora Oliveira. Inspired by the story of Luiz Otávio, a musician who was born blind and managed to have a successful career, the students researched accessible amusement parks and discovered that there were no public options for wheelchair users, for example.

With Debora's help, they decided to plan this new leisure area for Madureira Park, which is very popular with the students themselves. To finance the purchase of the swing, the class created an online fundraiser, which went viral on social media and, thanks to this, they were able to reach their goal for the toy.

The swing was supposed to be installed in March, but plans were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This Wednesday, at 10 am, students will be at the park to see the results of the action they promoted.

For student Gabriela Pinheiro, who is part of the project, this is just the first step towards creating a complete park in Madureira:

– Let’s open a new “fundraiser” to buy new toys.
