Environmental patrol rescues 29 birds from two captives in the West Zone of the city

Credit: Disclosure / Municipal Guard The Rio City Hall, through the Municipal Guard and the Municipal Secretariat for the Environment, carried out an operation this Tuesday, the 18th, with support from the Environmental Protection Department (DPMA), to rescue 29 small birds of various sizes that were kept in two captivity facilities in the West Zone of Rio.
Based on complaints received through Central 1746, the environmental patrol went to Rua José do Patrocínio, in Cosmos, where they found 11 birds, of different species, kept in captivity in a residential house.
The agents seized the birds and took a woman to the Environmental Protection Police Station in Cidade da Polícia, in the North Zone of Rio, to provide clarification. The woman's husband then appeared at the police station to give a statement, and was later released.
The second operation took place at a residence located on Rua Monte Rei, in Paciência. The environmental patrol found another 18 birds kept in captivity.
A couple who were in the house were also taken by the agents to the police station, where they are currently giving statements.
In addition to being taken to the police station, where the perpetrators will be charged with environmental crimes, the Municipal Department of the Environment will issue fines to both owners for illegal possession of wild animals.
All 29 birds, of the Trinca-ferro, Coleiro and Sabiá species, among others, were taken to the Ibama Wildlife Triage Center, in Seropédica, in the Metropolitan Region of Rio, where they will be examined by veterinarians.
The environmental patrol is made up of inspectors from the Municipal Department of the Environment and municipal guards from the Environmental Defense Group. The City of Rio advises the public to call the patrol by dialing 1746 if they spot wild animals in urban areas in the city of Rio or in any risky situation outside their habitat for safe rescue. Handling them is not advisable, much less trying to scare them away, as this can aggravate any injuries the animals may have. The 1746 hotline operates 24 hours a day.
