- Píer do Caju is handed over to the community fully modernized
Caju Pier is handed over to the community renovated and modernized - Fábio Motta/City of Rio The Rio City Hall handed over, this Saturday (29/6), the renovation and modernization works of the pier on Rua Circular da Quinta do Caju, in the Port Zone. The revitalization included the demolition and total reconstruction of the pier's slab, beams and pillars, in an investment of R$ 4 million.
Due to natural wear and tear, the old pier structure posed a risk to the population and, especially, to fishermen who use the area. The renovation carried out by the Municipal Infrastructure Department also modernized the lighting at the Quinta do Caju Pier, with the installation of 18 LED lights and 16 fiber optic poles, in addition to the installation of a roof, finishing and painting services.
Mayor Eduardo Paes, who inaugurated the pier together with Secretary Jessick Trairi, of Infrastructure, said he was happy to meet a long-standing demand from residents.
– Caju was forgotten 30 years ago. The first time I came here, the situation was very degrading. Today we are in a clean place. But unfortunately, there is still the absurd problem of garbage in Guanabara Bay. It is a challenge for the future – said Paes.
A resident of Caju for 68 years and a fisherman for 52 years, Arlindo Marques Antônio said that the work on the pier arrived at a good time.
-This place was all broken, bad and dangerous, both for those who work here, like me, and for the people who came to take the boat here. Now, it's beautiful - said the fisherman.
Caju, a historic neighborhood
Quinta do Caju was an upscale area of Rio de Janeiro for many years. The neighborhood, at the time considered rural, was purchased for medicinal baths by D. João VI, but later began to be subdivided by the Portuguese who accompanied the royal family. Caju is a historic neighborhood in the city, where the old Bath House of D. João VI is located.
