The South Zone Subprefecture, in partnership with the Parks and Gardens Foundation (FPJ), carried out an urban revitalization action as part of the Planta+Rio program in São Conrado. The initiative promoted the replanting of 18 trees in different parts of the neighborhood, contributing to the recovery and expansion of the region's tree cover.
The work began on Saturday (September 5th) on the São Conrado waterfront, on Avenida Prefeito Mendes de Morais, and progressed along the neighborhood's internal roads, such as Avenida Aquarela do Brasil and the central reservation of the Engenheiro Fernando Mac Dowell Highway. Among the species planted are coconut palm, guanandi, and aldrago.
"This replanting action reinforces our commitment to preserving the neighborhoods of the South Zone. The participation of residents is fundamental to the success of this initiative. More than transforming the landscape, urban afforestation is an essential strategy to make cities healthier, more balanced and sustainable," said Pedro Angelito, sub-mayor of the South Zone.
Launched in December 2025 by the Municipal Secretariat for the Environment and Climate (SMAC), Planta+Rio is a project of the Rio de Janeiro City Hall that seeks to expand and improve the city's urban tree cover, promoting the direct participation of the population. Through the initiative, residents can request seedlings, monitor the progress of plantings, and contribute to the care and preservation of trees in their communities.
Urban afforestation plays an important role in improving environmental quality and the well-being of the population. In addition to contributing to the enhancement of public spaces and the restoration of the landscape, trees help reduce temperatures, improve air quality, and create more pleasant areas for social interaction.
