Praça General Osório has a gym for senior citizens and its toys have been restored - Rio City Hall The revitalization of Praça General Osório, in Ipanema, was inaugurated this Wednesday (3/8). The work included the restoration of furniture, installation of a gym for senior citizens, renovation of the playground equipment, opening of the dog park and restoration of the Chafariz das Saracuras, among other improvements.
– General Osório Square is very symbolic for the neighborhood. Having renovated it shows that the City Hall is paying attention and making the improvements that the South Zone deserves, ensuring that the public spaces are back for everyone to enjoy life together. The South Zone sub-prefecture followed every detail of the process to ensure that the delivery was carried out in the best possible way, serving the neighborhood’s residents, tourists and visitors – stated the South Zone sub-mayor, Flávio Valle.
One of the main squares in the city's South Zone, the birthplace of the Banda de Ipanema and the Feira Hippie, General Osório brings together families, artists, intellectuals, residents of Ipanema and the Cantagalo community. A resident of Ipanema since she was born, Ana Cristina Carvalho says that the revitalization of the square was important both for improving security and the structure of the space.
– The South Zone has a different structure than Barra, for example, which has large condominiums. Here, we use public spaces; the surrounding buildings don’t have playgrounds. So, we tend to come to the squares. I’ve seen that the sub-prefecture is present and another thing that catches my attention is that the use of events in the squares keeps the space from being abandoned – said Ana Cristina, 55 years old.
Over the course of the administration, more than seven squares and parks have been revitalized, in addition to the renovations that are still underway, including Flamengo and Chacrinha Parks, four tunnels (Zuzu Angel, Rafael Mascarenhas, Rebouças and Túnel Velho). New safety programs were also developed, such as the Set of Prevention Strategies (CEP) and the expansion of Rio + Seguro. Actions in the communities included slope containment works, under the Babilônia Program, and the delivery of social rent to families in Pavão Pavãozinho who lived in makeshift houses, at imminent risk.
One of the highlights is the revitalization of the Glória neighborhood, with the Dias de Glória Program. Other initiatives included the recovery of the Morro Azul and Largo do Boticário areas, the Mureta do Leme, the Mirante do Leblon and the Tim Maia bike path.
The Smooth Asphalt Program has already begun in four neighborhoods in the South Zone and will cover all streets in Copacabana. Daily actions to organize and provide social support have been intensified and, in six months, more than 13 thousand people have been served. For the sub-prefecture, the biggest bottleneck is the organization of the region. Therefore, it emphasizes the importance of the population's collaboration, so as to avoid the irregular dumping of more than four tons of garbage per day. Urban cleaning is already being carried out with new equipment from Comlurb.
The renovation of General Osório Square, carried out by the Instituto Carioca Cidade Criativa (ICCC), is the result of a public-private partnership (PPP) through the Adote Rio program. In addition to Deputy Mayor Flávio Valle, the event was attended by the president of Fecomércio RJ, Antonio Florencio de Queiroz Junior, and members of the traditional Banda de Ipanema.
