Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes presented the key to the city to Prince William of Wales on Sugarloaf Mountain on Monday morning (November 3rd). The heir to the British throne received a warm welcome and expressed his admiration for the city of Rio de Janeiro.
"I was able to explain a little about the fantastic geography of Rio de Janeiro. I showed him our favelas, our most affluent areas, the most well-known landmarks, and naturally, like everyone who comes to visit Rio de Janeiro, he was impressed. He remembered his father's visit here. He remembered his mother's visit here. In short, they have a lot of affection for Brazil and especially for Rio," said the mayor of Rio.
Prince William is in Rio to participate in the Earthshot Prize ceremony, considered one of the world's leading environmental awards, which takes place on Wednesday (November 5th) at the Museum of Tomorrow. The award was created by the prince with the mission of: identifying and accelerating solutions with the potential to restore the planet by 2030. His work is guided by the belief that urgency + optimism = action.
The Earthshot Prize ceremony in Rio will bring together international leaders, innovators, scientists, philanthropists, and representatives of civil society to recognize transformative and scalable environmental solutions. Each of the five winners will receive a prize of £1 million in one of five categories: Protecting and Restoring Nature, Cleaning the Air, Reviving the Oceans, Building a Waste-Free World, and Combating the Climate Crisis.
