City Hall inaugurates viewpoint in Ana Gonzaga West Park and celebrates two weddings.

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes participated this Wednesday (March 4th) in the inauguration of the Ana Gonzaga West Park viewpoint in Inhoaíba, and officiated two weddings in the new space. The opening expands the areas for contemplation and socializing in one of the largest public facilities in the West Zone and marks another step in consolidating the complex as a hub for leisure, sports, and culture in the region.

– The West Park viewpoint is a space that symbolizes encounter, coexistence and the future – said Mayor Eduardo Paes.

Measuring 250 meters in length and offering a view of the entire park, the observation deck was built in an area near the Roberto Burle Marx Water Staircase. The space was designed to offer a new perspective of the complex and expand the possibilities for public use of the park. The structure will now be integrated into the park's circuit of attractions.

The architectural concept for the viewpoint is by Dietmar Starke, an architect and urban planner from the Municipal Urbanization Company (Rio-Urbe). Starke is also the author of high-impact projects in the city, such as the Knowledge Centers, and is part of the team of authors for the Rio Olympic Museum.

The viewpoint was conceived as the architectural expression of the park's very concept: an integration between nature, city, and citizenship. Located at the highest point of the terrain, its spiral shape interacts with the relief, the light, and the horizon, creating a path that gradually reveals the landscape and invites contemplation. Light and ascending, the structure evokes the image of a kite with its tail blowing in the wind, a symbol of movement and freedom, an affective element of the cultural landscape of the West Zone.

The structure offers a panoramic view that connects, in a single visual field, already completed facilities such as the Roberto Burle Marx Water Staircase, the Knowledge Center, and the swimming pool for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, summarizing the scale of the complex. From above, one can also see the surrounding communities, the hills, and the vastness of Campo Grande.

"From the viewpoint, you can see not only the park but the entire neighborhood. You can really enjoy the scenery. The view is incredible," said civil engineer Monique Almeida, 29, who has been frequenting Parque Oeste for a year.

Weddings celebrated at the viewpoint

During the inauguration of the viewpoint, two weddings were celebrated. The first couple is Débora Cristina da Silva de Souza, a Comlurb employee for 13 years and currently based in Parque Oeste, and Wagner Reis, who has worked for the company for 21 years, in the 18th management office in Campo Grande. Together for five years, they met at work and live on Estrada do Campinho, about ten minutes from Parque Oeste. Débora says that working in the park has brought her a better quality of life and a sense of freedom.

"It's very rewarding, because I work cleaning the park for the community. And now we have this wonderful viewpoint from which we can see the neighborhood and the extent of the park," said Débora.

The second couple consists of Eduardo da Silva Júnior, 39, who works at the Department of Conservation and Public Services and has been at the park for two years, and Marlene Dias de Castro, 33, an entrepreneur. Residents of Estrada da Posse, in the Carolina neighborhood, Eduardo and Marlene met in Minas Gerais when they were young and reconnected years later. For Eduardo, witnessing the park's expansion has been a milestone in his professional and personal life. He says the park has become like a second family and that his goal is to see it increasingly frequented by the public.

– Parque Oeste was a turning point in my life. Working here is a source of great joy, something special. We affectionately call the public our customers. The park is life, and the people of Rio are blessed to have it here – said Eduardo.

Ana Gonzaga West Park

Built by Rio-Urbe, linked to the Municipal Secretariat of Infrastructure, the Ana Gonzaga West Park occupies a total area of ​​234 square meters on Avenida Cesário de Melo. It was inaugurated in September 2024 and already includes facilities such as the Roberto Burle Marx Water Staircase, the Knowledge Center, a skate park, a soccer field, an ecumenical space, and the Olympic swimming pool from the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The total investment exceeds R$ 220 million.

New facilities are still under construction and will be delivered this semester. The area will gain a children's playground and a waterfall shower, with a support building equipped with changing rooms and a dining area. The complex will also include two public schools, multi-sports courts, sand courts, a support building for the complex's workers, and the base of the Municipal Guard's Elite Division – Municipal Force.
