Mayors of Rio and Miami debate on the first day of the largest innovation and technology meeting in Latin America

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes participated in the opening of the first edition of Rio Innovation Week, the most comprehensive innovation and technology event in Latin America, on Thursday (13/1). The event will be held until Sunday (16/1) at the Jockey Club Brasileiro. In one of the panels, Eduardo Paes debated with Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, via video, about the challenges of transforming a city into an innovation hub with incentives for generating new businesses.

 

– Today’s world revolves much more around a network of cities, the so-called global cities. Miami and Rio are global cities that attract people, functions and organizations. This international dialogue is very important – said Eduardo Paes, thanking the mayor of Miami for participating in the event.

 

 

Rio Innovation Week brings together different market segments that currently use technology as a basis for business growth and expansion, as well as creating new opportunities and scenarios. With a focus on stimulating networking, expanding reach and generating more connections, the event covers the following segments: Tourism, Retail, Health, Professions, Startups, Agribusiness, Sustainability and Marketing, among others.

 

– We want to make Rio the Brazilian capital of innovation and all the efforts of the City Hall have been in this direction. Rio Innovation Week is another milestone in attracting investments and major events to the city, which has a natural vocation for the theme – explained the Secretary of Economic Development, Innovation and Simplification, Chicão Bulhões.

 

City Startup Census

In addition to participating in panels and lectures, the City Hall will also be present at the event with several booths. Invest.Rio, the city's investment attraction company, will take advantage of the opportunity to register the players in the city's innovation ecosystem, a kind of startup census. The goal is to have more accurate information about this niche so that public policies for the sector can be better targeted.

In addition to this registration, the Invest.Rio stand will also be showcasing the city's main innovation projects, such as Porto Maravalley. With two stands at the event, the intention is to establish a closer relationship with the innovation ecosystem to transform Rio into the tech capital of South America. Invest.Rio's projects will be on display at the stands and meetings can be scheduled at the Beer And Coffee space in the Turistech arena.

 

– Rio de Janeiro has everything it needs to become the tech capital of South America. Events like Rio Innovation Week serve to strengthen the city’s image as the perfect place to work, live and innovate. We want to hold a RIW event every month in the “Marvelous City” – said Rodrigo Stallone, president of Invest.Rio.

 

In partnership with the Rio de Janeiro Smart City Technical Coordination and the Smart Luz concessionaire, the Rio de Janeiro Operations Center (COR) stand is inspired by its famous Control Room, with monitors that will display real-time camera images. Another attraction will be an unprecedented virtual experience: the first 360° tour of the organization, which can be visited using VR glasses.

The Special Secretariat for Rio de Janeiro Youth (JUVRio) will have a stand at the HUB Arena, a space dedicated to technological innovations and experimentation by professionals, startups, sports entities, universities, research centers, students, athletes, investors and large companies. JUVRio will present its actions to use 4.0 technology as a tool for the job market. Visitors to the stand will be able to learn more about the secretariat's projects and have access to the Service Guide for Rio de Janeiro Youth and the Youth Statute.

The Municipal Department of Science and Technology (SMCT) will also be present with a booth at the Health Tech Tent, where videos will be shown presenting the actions carried out by SMCT in 2021 and the department's projects for 2022, in addition to the distribution of printed material presenting the Knowledge Ships, which are SMCT equipment. On Friday (14/01), there will be a demonstration of the operation of a 3D printer that allows the reproduction of organs of the human body.

The Rio Innovation Week agenda includes 1.000 startups, 190 exhibitors and over 500 speakers from public and private institutions. Some of the keynote speakers include Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, who will speak with the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil, Marcos Pontes; Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple; and Katia Vaskys, General Manager of IBM. The agenda of lectures also includes professionals such as Camila Farani, angel investor of Shark Tank Brazil; Rony Meisler, CEO partner of Reserva; Bruno Stefani, Global Innovation Director of Ambev; João Kepler, CEO of Bossanova Investimentos; Andrés de Léon, CEO of HyperloopTT; and Natalia Bayona, Director of Innovation at UNWTO – World Tourism Organization.
