The Elite Division of GM-Rio – Municipal Force begins policing in Botafogo this Sunday (May 10th), operating in three perimeters of the neighborhood. The operational plan and the assessment of actions since the beginning of operations on the streets, on March 15th, were presented this Saturday (May 9th) by the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, and the Secretary of Urban Security, Brenno Carnevale, to business owners, merchants, and local representatives. The meeting also included the participation of the Director-General of the Municipal Force, Aimée de La Torre.
– Today marks 60 days of operation for the Municipal Force, with over 400 arrests made, thousands of interventions, and a reduction in crime in the areas where the Municipal Force operates. And, most importantly, with the public's confidence that this group of agents from the Elite Division is ready to continue its mission. We are doing the Municipal Force's job in what is our responsibility: confronting and reducing robberies and thefts in the areas with the highest incidence of these crimes in the city, where the crime hotspots are located – highlighted the mayor of Rio.
The Secretary of Urban Security presented a summary of the first few days of the Municipal Force's operations, from March 15th to May 4th, highlighting the 449 arrests and detentions made. There were 2,3 stops and checks on 273 vehicles. One firearm was seized, along with four replicas and ten bladed weapons. 74 cell phones, 12 necklaces, 10 bicycles, and 52 motorcycles were recovered or seized.
And in Botafogo, policing will be carried out in three perimeters: Rua Lauro Müller x Rua General Severiano x Av. Venceslau Brás; the area surrounding the Botafogo Metro station, including Rua São Clemente, Rua Voluntários da Pátria and cross streets; in addition to the axis of Praia de Botafogo x Rua Marquês de Abrantes, and some streets in the Flamengo neighborhood.
– We will be operating in three sets of axes across several streets that concentrate thefts and robberies. We will cover the area from Praia de Botafogo, passing by the subway, Voluntários da Pátria, São Clemente, as well as Lauro Muller and Venceslau Brás, several streets that, according to consolidated data, concentrate this type of crime. It will be an overt policing operation, with the population noticing the Municipal Force agents on the streets – explained Brenno Carnevale.
The expansion into the neighborhood marks the second phase of the Municipal Force's operations in the city's South Zone, which began on March 15th in the Jardim de Alah area of Leblon. With this, Botafogo joins the other five perimeters already implemented in the Municipal Force's plan: Rio Bus Station X Gentileza Terminal X Leopoldina Station; Jardim de Alah; Avenida Presidente Vargas X Campo de Santana X Central do Brasil X Cinelândia; Campo Grande – train station X pedestrian walkway; Tijuca – São Francisco Xavier X Afonso Pena.
In total, 22 regions with a high incidence of robberies and thefts were mapped in the city. The expansion of policing occurs gradually, based on the analysis of crime hotspots, and is previously presented at CompStat Rio meetings.
