- Rio City Hall presents Jaé report and details the start of the digital ticketing transition
Ticketing system reaches unprecedented milestone upon completing its first year of operation. Photo: Conrado Portella/City Hall Rio's Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere and Municipal Transportation Secretary Maína Celidonio presented an overview of the implementation of Jaé, the city's new digital ticketing system, on Friday (July 04) and detailed the next steps in the transition. More than 07 million registrations were made and more than 2,6 million cards were issued, clearly consolidating the progress in the digitalization of Rio's public transportation.
— We are very pleased with the results of this month of free access to Jaé and with the peace of mind that tomorrow, July 5, as planned, we will begin the exclusive operation of Jaé for free access to the city. We are very grateful for the effort made by the people of Rio de Janeiro and the population of the metropolitan region, who have joined Jaé over the last few weeks — said Eduardo Cavaliere.
Starting this Saturday (05/07), Jaé will be the only valid system for free rides on municipal transportation modes — buses, BRT, VLT, vans and cabritinhos. Users entitled to the benefit must register in order to use the Jaé yellow card, which is issued on the spot at service points. 1,1 million registrations for free rides were made and 644 thousand cards were issued to this public.
— It is very important to emphasize that registration at Jaé does not end today or tomorrow. It is permanent. Even for those who are entitled to free access, such as the elderly, people with disabilities, chronic illnesses and students, the registration process is ongoing. Currently, more than half a million Rio residents use Jaé daily to board Rio's municipal transport — said Secretary Maína Celidonio.
Starting August 2, the use of Jaé will be mandatory for all users. This measure includes passengers on municipal transport, including those using transport vouchers. Employers should contact the company responsible for Jaé as soon as possible to enable the benefit for their employees.
Jaé can be used both digitally, via the app, and with a physical card linked to the user's account. The app allows you to request the card, top up via PIX, credit card or bank slip, pay for tickets using a QR Code, check balance, check statements, block or request a duplicate. The balance does not expire and remains protected in case of loss or theft.
A separate card is also available, which can be purchased at machines located at BRT and VLT stations. This model does not require registration and works independently, without being linked to a CPF or digital account, but the credits paid are restricted to the card and cannot be recovered in case of loss or theft.
To ensure a smooth transition, the city government has been strengthening its in-person service network. All 17 posts are open from Monday to Saturday, from 7 am to 19 pm. Four of them have been structured as Super Posts, with greater service capacity: the Municipal Employee Club (Cidade Nova), the Nave do Conhecimento (Engenho de Dentro), the Miécimo da Silva Sports Center (Campo Grande) and the Vila Olímpica de Deodoro.
In addition, two new stations were recently created to expand the service's reach: at Shopping dos Peixinhos, in Madureira, exclusively for free admission, and at Arena Jovelina Pérola Negra, in Pavuna. The Paulo da Portela Terminal continues to serve the general public. In the South Zone, the Botafogo station was relocated to Rua Dona Mariana, 48.
The City Hall advises users to prioritize online service whenever possible. After registering on the app, passengers can immediately use Jaé using the QR Code generated on the platform. People aged 65 or over are exempt from the R$7,95 fee for home delivery of the card if they choose this option.
It is worth noting that people entitled to free entry can register in person and leave with their yellow card in hand on the same day.
Single Carioca Ticket
Another important change concerns the fare integration of the Bilhete Único Carioca. Starting August 2, the R$4,70 fare will only be valid within the Jaé app. The benefit includes up to three integrations within three hours when using the BRT, and up to two integrations in other modes — municipal buses, VLT and legalized vans — on other trips.
The rules of the Intermunicipal Single Ticket remain unchanged. Users with an income of up to R$3.205,20, already registered in the system, will continue to use the Riocard card for their travel. Riocard validators will continue to work for this public.
