Rio City Hall completes works and delivers improvements in the North and South zones

Photo: Marcos de Paula The Rio City Hall delivered, this Saturday (12/04), infrastructure, urbanization and leisure works in the North and South zones of the city. Through the Morar Carioca program, in Morro do Cariri and Vila Cruzeiro, which are part of the Penha Complex, the new Merendiba Square was presented to residents, which has a multi-sports court, children's playground and common area.
– We are inaugurating this court, which will also have a roof to serve as a community space. But the most important thing is what no one sees: water, sewage, paving and dignity for the residents here -, said Mayor Eduardo Paes, when handing over the renovation of the space.
And he highlighted the importance of the region, referring to the Penha church:
– This place here is very special. This church is a point of reference, of inspiration. One of the icons of Rio de Janeiro.
The urbanization works in the communities of Morro do Cariri and part of Vila Cruzeiro are being carried out by the Housing Department to meet a long-standing demand from residents. In the area, the department is also carrying out a series of actions, such as urbanization of other parts of the region, paving, stairs, storm drainage, public lighting, slope containment, water networks and sewage.
– The court is the icing on the cake. We will also build 16 kilometers of asphalt, paving and water and sewage here – announced the Secretary of Housing, Diego Zeidan.
In total, the interventions will benefit more than 16 residents, living in 4.036 homes. The total investment in the Morar Carioca works in these communities will be R$63 million.
In the São Carlos Complex, in Estácio, the City Hall has completed containment works on the slope on Rua São Dinis. The intervention ensures greater safety for residents in the region, especially during rainy periods. The slope was concreted over an area of 950 square meters.
The Geo-Rio Foundation teams restored the old 900-square-meter anchored curtain. The existing water passageway, a 313-meter gutter, was also refurbished. A 21-meter piled wall was built and a garbage dump was constructed. The investment was R$984.
Revitalization of the Canton Field on the Guararapes Hill in Cosme Velho
The City Hall also inaugurated the new multi-sports court in the Guararapes community. The space was revitalized by the Municipal Urbanization Company (Rio-Urbe) and now offers more structure for the practice of sports and leisure for residents.
– More than just a sports area, we have created a space for community integration here. A place for lots of celebration that will bring the Guararapes community even closer together – said Mayor Eduardo Paes.
The services included the construction of a metal structure to cover the court and the installation of volleyball, basketball and soccer equipment. The court's floor, walls, bleachers, fence and guardrail were painted and the surrounding leisure area was revitalized with the installation of a roof and game tables. The lighting in the area was also revised. The investment was R$592 thousand.
Maria Fernanda Cebrian, president of Rio-Urbe, highlighted the improvements at the site:
– There was already a court here and we rebuilt it so that the community could use it at all times, on rainy and sunny days. We built a roof, fenced it and put in a new floor.
A resident of the community for 60 years, Rosemary Xisto was delighted with the space where her grandchildren, Luigi and Miguel, will be able to play sports:
– There’s nothing better! This renovation turned out great and the kids are loving it.
