The operation removed more than 2.500 tons of debris from canals and drainage networks - Marcelo Piu/Rio City Hall The Rio de Janeiro City Hall concludes, this Thursday (February 12th), flood prevention services in the Sambadrome area. In preparation for Carnival, the work by the Rio-Águas Foundation began in December and removed more than 2.500 tons of debris from canals and drainage networks in the Sambadrome and surrounding streets.
Teams are finalizing cleaning services on the drainage systems of twenty streets surrounding the Samba Walkway, with the help of a vacuum truck. Among the streets benefiting are Rua Frei Caneca, in Catumbi, and Avenida Presidente Vargas and Avenida Trinta e Um de Março, among others.
In January, a hydraulic excavator cleaned the Mangue Canal, the main waterway in the region, along Avenida Presidente Vargas, between the Zumbi dos Palmares monument and the vicinity of Rio de Janeiro City Hall. The work was carried out at night to avoid interfering with traffic.
– We are carrying out these services in the Mangue Canal and in the drainage networks of the Sambadrome region to prevent flooding in the city center, especially in the summer. The work also prepares the Samba Parade area for Carnival, cleaning internal networks, surrounding streets, and the Papa-Couve River galleries – explains the president of the Rio-Águas Foundation, João Telles.
In December, teams completed the clearing of the Sambadrome's internal drainage networks, cleaning manually and with the aid of vacuum trucks. The galleries of the Papa-Couve River, which runs under Rua Marquês de Sapucaí, were also inspected and cleaned.
