Rio de Janeiro City Hall inaugurates Educational Technology Gymnasium in Guadalupe, in the North Zone.

Students Artur and Maria Fernanda, 11 years old, develop projects in the collaborative space - Disclosure The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, inaugurated this Saturday (May 16th) the Educational Technological Gymnasium (GET) CIEP João do Rio, in Guadalupe, in the North Zone. The new unit extends the offer of innovative public education to approximately 330 students, totaling more than 125,000 throughout the city, which now has 308 GETs.
Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere visited the collaborative center, a modern work environment, where he learned about some projects produced by GET students. He highlighted the importance of access to technology.
"There is nothing more important in our lives than the place where our children study. And the GETs represent, in Rio's education system, a look towards the future. Every child, every girl, every boy who studies here, is in a school that prepares them for the future. That's why there is access to programming language and reinforcement in mathematics and Portuguese. This is what gives sovereignty, gives independence in the life of each child. This is the greatest tool they have for the future: learning Portuguese well, learning mathematics well, having access to the language of the future, which is programming language, and being able to graduate from a school like the CIEP João do Rio, now the João do Rio Technological Educational Gymnasium," said the mayor.
This year's goal is to reach 350 GETs (Technological Educational Gymnasiums), reaching 150 students. By the end of 2028, there will be 500 GETs. These Technological Educational Gymnasiums integrate different areas of knowledge and stimulate critical thinking, sensitivity, creativity, and student leadership. The commitment is to expand the reach of active methodologies and further strengthen comprehensive education in different areas of Rio de Janeiro.
The Secretary of Education, Hugo Nepomuceno, highlighted, among the proposals of GET, the group study for the development of projects:
– Here, learning is hands-on. Our students learn in a way that will connect them with the best opportunities in the future. It's learning for solving everyday problems. The GET program aims to bring a lot of technology, a lot of robotics, but also collaborative learning, group study in the development of projects that connect to solving everyday problems. And here we have all the tools: 3D printers, virtual reality glasses, and everything else that students need to develop work that makes them truly want to be at school every day. This school challenges them and is attractive to each one of them.
Recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC) as one of the best inspiring experiences in management and pedagogical projects in full-time education in the country, the initiative consolidates Rio as the Innovation Capital and strengthens digital and media literacy in the municipal network. By integrating technology, creativity, and active methodologies into the curriculum, the GETs promote full-time education focused on student protagonism and practical learning, preparing students for the challenges of the future.
These units also represent a new concept of 21st-century schooling—spaces dedicated to didactic-pedagogical innovation, knowledge experimentation, and active collaboration between students and educators. The Technological Educational Gymnasiums adopt the STEAM approach—an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics—and reinforce the network's commitment to holistic education.
Each unit boasts modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment. In the collaborative environment, students develop projects using artificial intelligence, 3D printers, laser cutters, projection glasses, robotics kits, and even sewing machines. The goal is to bring technology and knowledge closer to the daily lives of families and strengthen the relationship between schools and their communities.
Sixth-grade student Maria Fernanda Lima, 11, identified the collaborative space as her favorite environment in the unit.
– I love the collaborative environment. It's been my favorite part of school since it was created (two weeks ago). I think the school was already very good, but it's gotten much better. Here, I learn from my classmates, from my teachers, I help my friends… We just built a game out of cardboard boxes. I still don't know how to use the 3D printer. It's difficult, isn't it? It's really difficult. But I've already written with the 3D pen – said the student, who dreams of becoming an architect.
