Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes witnessed the start of construction on the Gentileza Intermodal Terminal, on the former Gasômetro site in the Port Region, this Thursday (21/7). The remaining buildings on the expropriated part of the land have begun to be demolished. Construction on the BRT platform is progressing outside the site and is now being completed alongside the construction of the terminal. The entire system will be completed by the end of 2023 with the delivery of the VLT platforms and regular municipal buses.

– This will be the real Transbrasil integration terminal. We will have full integration with the VLT. Passengers arriving by BRT can take the VLT if they are going downtown. If they are going to the South Zone or Tijuca, they can take a bus. Transbrasil will meet up with Transolímpica in Deodoro, with Transcarioca near Ramos, and with the VLT at the Gentileza Terminal. These transportation modes were not only destroyed in the last four years, they were also not integrated. With them, people will have their lives made easier, with integrated tickets. Those who take the BRT will not need to pay for a new VLT ticket. With the new ticketing and subsidy model, the City Hall will be able to make this integration possible – stated Eduardo Paes.

The delivery is scheduled to take place in stages. The first mode to start operating will be the BRT. Then, municipal buses will start to make their final stop at the location. Finally, the VLT extension, the entire structure of the terminal and surrounding area will be delivered in the last quarter of 2023. Up to 95 BRT buses, 21 VLT trains and 137 municipal buses will circulate at the location per hour.

The Gentileza Intermodal Terminal will integrate the BRT Transbrasil, 22 municipal bus lines and VLT lines 1 and 2, which will be extended by approximately 700 meters to the former Gasômetro area. It is estimated that more than 130 people will pass through the terminal every day, integrating with the BRT, conventional buses and VLT.

The works will cost R$250 million and the metal structure will be made from recycled material from the International Broadcasting Center (IBC), located in the Olympic Park and used during Rio 2016. The dismantling of the columns is on schedule and should be completed by September.

– Of the 130 people expected to pass through the terminal daily, half will take the VLT and the other half will take the municipal buses. We want to provide quality and comfortable integration in a very large terminal, where passengers will go up to a platform and choose the mode they want to use – said the president of the Companhia Carioca de Parcerias e Investimentos (CCPar), Gustavo Guerrante.

The name and design of the Terminal are a reference to José Datrino, the Prophet of Kindness. He became known for the inscriptions he immortalized on the columns of the Gasômetro and Perimetral viaducts. The most famous of these is the phrase Kindness breeds Kindness, which is now printed on T-shirts, stickers and, with the inauguration of the Gentileza Terminal, also on its walls.

BRT Transbrasil

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Infrastructure Department, resumed work on the Transbrasil BRT in August of last year. The work was halted during the last administration and is currently on schedule. The work is due to be completed at the end of this year and the total investment is R$1,89 billion.

In total, there will be 18 stations, four terminals – Deodoro, Margaridas, Missões and the Gentileza intermodal terminal – and 22 more interventions such as viaducts and lane widening along 25 km of road. The stations are already taking shape, several footbridges on Avenida Brasil have been replaced and some are in the foundation and fabrication phase for later installation.

The Margaridas and Missões terminals are already in an advanced phase and the Deodoro terminal had its slab concreting completed for the first stage and is now proceeding with the execution of the second stage of the superstructure, where 15 beams are being launched, ranging from 58 to 90 tons, lengths between 17 and 24 m, with the support of a crane with a capacity of 450 tons.
