The Subprefecture of Large Complexes, in partnership with Comlurb, carried out the 'Community of Responsibility' program on Friday (December 5th) in Manguinhos, in the North Zone of Rio. The integrated special cleaning action took place in streets, alleys and lanes of the region.

According to the deputy mayor, Marlí Peçanha, the initiative aims to improve living conditions in the community, which was affected by the heavy rains last Friday, the 28th.

– We are working continuously, acting towards the recovery of the territory and the resumption of the residents' routine. But it is essential that everyone becomes aware of the importance of proper waste disposal, thus avoiding environmental contamination, the spread of diseases and the occurrence of new floods – he emphasizes.

Immediately after the storm, Comlurb collected 84 tons of waste and unusable goods in Manguinhos. The Social Assistance Secretariat assisted families impacted by the rain, and the Conservation Secretariat carried out road maintenance, resurfacing the most affected streets, in addition to demolishing a four-story building at risk of collapse. The property had already been condemned by Civil Defense and was unoccupied. The Rio-Águas Foundation also began dredging the Faria-Timbó River to facilitate water drainage.

According to the president of Comlurb, Jorge Arraes, 140 sanitation workers reinforced the cleaning of the community, with services such as sweeping, weeding, cutting grass with mechanized equipment, cleaning drains and removing waste.

"The teams also carried out hydraulic cleaning with reused water and soap. Our technicians assess the extra services needed, and these are included in these actions," he explains.

During the operation, three water tanker trucks were used to wash the roads, along with seven compactor and dump trucks, a front-end loader, and twenty brush cutters, in addition to two motor pump vans equipped with tools to facilitate the work of the teams and optimize time.

The "Community Responsibility" initiative took place in seven areas of Manguinhos: Conjunto Ex-Combatentes, Vila Turismo, PAC, Coreia, Comunidade Agrícola/CH, Parque João Goulart/Favelinha, and Vila São Pedro, where approximately 54 people live. The action was planned in conjunction with residents and local leaders. In August of this year, the Subprefecture of Large Complexes and Comlurb carried out a similar operation in the Mandela 1/Embratel, Mandela 2, and Varginha communities, also located in the Manguinhos Complex.
