Rio de Janeiro City Hall promotes social action in community centers.

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Secretariat for Healthy Aging and Quality of Life (SEMESQV), held the first edition of “Rio that Cares: A Special Day for the Elderly” on Tuesday (August 25th) at the Maria Haydée Community Center in Gávea. The event brought together attendees of the unit and the Bibi Franklin Leal Community Center for a morning of health services, therapies, beauty treatments, self-care, and social activities.

The initiative aims to promote integration among those who frequent the different Community Centers, expanding opportunities for interaction, exchange of experiences, and the creation of new bonds.

– The integration was wonderful. It was so good to come here to Casa Maria Haydée. I didn't know it and I loved it. We had a lot of fun and were very well received. It's always a pleasure to leave Casa Bibi and have this integration between the Houses – said Dalva Almeida, 75, a regular at Casa Bibi Franklin Leal.

During the program, services such as massage therapy, auriculotherapy, physiotherapy, kinesitherapy, lymphatic drainage, foot reflexology, foot spa, and hot stone massage were offered. Movement and social activities were also held, such as stretching, ballroom dancing, and Tai Chi Chuan.

In the health area, participants had access to glucose testing, blood pressure measurement, weighing, and clinical analysis exams. The program also included beauty and self-care services, including haircuts, braids, facial cleansing, and makeup.

The "Rio que Cuida" (Rio that Cares) program will continue in four other Community Centers. The next edition will be held on September 1st at the Carmen Miranda Community Center in Penha, followed by the Chacrinha unit on Ilha do Governador; the Lolita Rodrigues unit in Guaratiba; and the Padre Velloso unit in Botafogo.

Currently, the municipality has 10 Community Centers, spaces for meeting, social participation, and promoting quality of life for people aged 50 and over. These centers offer activities that encourage autonomy, strengthen bonds, and contribute to physical, mental, and emotional health.
