Rio de Janeiro City Hall brings the first Rio de Janeiro edition of Caminho Agro Rio to the city.

Photo: JP Engelbrecht The Rio de Janeiro City Hall opened the Caminho Agro Rio exhibition this Friday (March 27th), which runs until Sunday (March 29th) at Riocentro. The fair is sponsored by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Sub-Secretariat of Agriculture, an agency linked to the Civil House. This is the first time the Caminho Agro exhibition has come to the city, bringing the atmosphere of major national agricultural fairs, with animal competitions, a business fair, lectures, children's programming, and shows with big names in Brazilian country music. The municipal secretariats of Education, Metropolitan Integration, and Environment and Climate are also participating in the event.
— Bringing a fair of this size to the city is an opportunity to generate business for producers from Rio de Janeiro, in addition to promoting rural entrepreneurship and the exchange of knowledge about the sector. The Agricultural Policy created in October of last year is already showing concrete results in the mapping and training of producers, as well as the issuance of CAF seals —, said Leandro Matieli, municipal secretary of the Civil House.
The choice of the city was not by chance. The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, which launched the Municipal Agricultural, Livestock and Fisheries Policy last October, has been developing actions to stimulate rural production in the municipality, training the workforce and creating conditions to strengthen entrepreneurship in the sector. In three months, more than two thousand services were provided to rural producers in more than 60 neighborhoods of the city. More than 30 CAF (National Family Farming Registry) seals have also been issued. As part of the Policy, six training and capacity-building courses were promoted for employees, totaling 309 participants. In the field of diagnostics, 515 vegetable producers were identified; 216 floriculture producers; 288 fruit growers; in addition to 470 livestock farmers, 391 of whom are focused on raising small animals, and 301 fishermen.
Among the actions of the Agricultural Policy are the identification and training of family farmers, the creation of the program's headquarters at the Model Farm, the issuance of CAF (National Registry of Family Farming) seals, and the integration of urban production, municipal inspection, and the issuance of SISBI certification seals, in joint action with IVISA-Rio, the Municipal Institute of Sanitary Surveillance, an agency of the Municipal Health Department.
"Since the creation of the agricultural policy, we have initiated training and capacity-building programs. We have already started mapping and identifying family farmers, inaugurated the program's headquarters at the Model Farm, and are developing other initiatives to incentivize the sector. We are very happy with the progress so far," says the Undersecretary of Agriculture, Raphael Moreira.
The Sub-Secretariat of Agriculture has a booth at the event for agricultural producers from the municipality to showcase their products and generate business during the event. The municipal secretariats of Education, Environment and Climate, and Metropolitan Integration are also participating in the fair.
Education
The Municipal Department of Education will take 270 children from the municipality to visit the exhibition. These are students from the Renascer Municipal Daycare Center and the São Domingos Municipal School, in Del Castilho.
Environment and Climate
The Secretariat of Environment and Climate will present the Hortas Cariocas Program. An exhibiting gardener will demonstrate to the public the daily field practices and some products produced in the Units. Hortas Cariocas promotes agroecology in urban environments in more than 84 units, distributed throughout all regions of the city, such as Nova Sepetiba, Madureira, and Manguinhos, the largest with production capacity. In 2025, more than 1.760 garden beds and 84 vegetable gardens were installed, and 136.850 seedlings of vegetables and legumes, 302 fruit seedlings, and 27 composting production units were planted. Twelve farmers' markets were also held, 80 volunteers and 302 gardeners were trained, and approximately 75 tons of food were produced.
Metropolitan Integration
The Metropolitan Integration Secretariat will present to the public the projects of the Carioca + Sustainable Seal and the Metropolitan Consortium, both under development. The Seal deals with the mapping of agri-food production hubs and establishments that sell healthy food, and the Metropolitan Consortium deals with the generation of clean energy to promote development and urban transformation, boosting decarbonization and reducing energy costs, bringing savings to the municipality.
About the Agro Route
For four days, the public will be able to explore a setting typical of agricultural fairs held in the state's interior. Award-winning cattle and horse breeds such as Nelore and Mangalarga Marchador share space with a small farm of exotic animals, country fashion stands, typical foods, and producers from the state's interior. The concert schedule includes César Menotti & Fabiano (Thursday, March 26th), Eduardo Costa (Friday, March 27th), and Zezé Di Camargo (Saturday, March 28th). Sunday, March 29th, will be dedicated to children's programming. The Municipal Department of Education will bring 270 children from the municipality to visit the exhibition.
