The Rio de Janeiro City Hall announced on Tuesday (November 4th), in partnership with Uber, the creation of a Technological Development Center in the city, with an investment of R$ 500 million and the opening of 200 new positions for technology professionals over five years. The announcement was made by Mayor Eduardo Paes during the C40 World Mayors Summit at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM)/Vivo Rio complex.

"This is great news for the city. Uber is demonstrating enormous affection for Rio de Janeiro with the announcement of the construction of a technology center, a major investment over the next five years. This will allow us to have 200 high-quality jobs in the city. We work to bring investments to Rio; this is the best place in Brazil to develop and innovate, and Uber is part of that," stated Eduardo Paes.

This initiative aligns with the innovation agenda being promoted by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall and positions Uber as a long-term partner in the city's economic development and digital transformation. Operations are scheduled to begin in 2026.

"We are making another major announcement, bringing qualified opportunities to the city. A company like Uber is growing its skilled workforce of developers and engineers in Rio de Janeiro. So, having this additional aspect means that we are succeeding in bringing qualified jobs back to the city," said the Secretary of Economic Development, Osmar Lima.

For this new center, Uber plans to develop partnerships with local universities and research centers to train and attract talent, as well as joint technical training projects. The professionals hired in Rio will work on technology projects for Uber's global platform, delivering services to users and partners worldwide.

"This investment reinforces Brazil's role on Uber's global technology map. The Rio Tech Center complements São Paulo and expands our ability to attract and develop highly qualified professionals," said Silvia Penna, general manager of Uber in Brazil.

The work will encompass everything from product feature development to back-end and data engineering, as well as user experiences and internal tools. In a context where artificial intelligence is redefining the development cycle, the new center will bring together teams from software engineering, data platforms and infrastructure, user experience, and applied AI research and development, focusing on scalable solutions with global impact.
