City Hall pays homage to Renato Russo with the installation of a Carioca Cultural Heritage plaque in the building where the artist lived in Ipanema

The plaque was installed on the building where Renato Russo lived, in Ipanema - Rio City Hall The Rio City Hall, through the Subprefecture of the South Zone, the Rio Heritage Institute (IRPH) and the Municipal Department of Education, installed a plaque of Carioca Cultural Heritage on Tuesday (25/7) in the building where Renato Russo lived, on Rua Nascimento Silva, in Ipanema. The artist's son, Giuliano Manfredini, participated in the tribute, as well as the Subprefect of the South Zone, Flávio Valle, the Municipal Secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha, and the president of the Rio Heritage Institute, Laura Di Blasi.
Renato Russo lived in the property from 1990 to 1996, and his first solo album, Stonewall Celebration, featured the artist's image on the facade of the building in Ipanema as its cover photo. It was also there that he composed at least four other albums: Equilíbrio Distante; “V”; O Descobrimento do Brasil; and A Tempestade.
The work of identifying the city's cultural heritage is carried out by IRPH, an agency linked to the Municipal Department of Urban Planning, which ensures the identification of assets and sites linked to Rio's culture and identity. By placing an informative plaque, the City Hall selects prominent locations for each theme. On each plaque, visitors can learn a little more about the location and its importance to the city's history and the theme in question.
– Renato Russo is part of the history and imagination of Rio de Janeiro. Rio and the neighborhood of Ipanema were chosen by the artist as his home and there he composed at least five albums, including his first solo album, The Stonewall Celebration Concert, whose cover is a photo of the artist at the door of his building. This tribute is more than deserved and necessary to immortalize Renato Russo’s partnership with the Marvelous City – said the deputy mayor of the South Zone, Flávio Valle.
– The IRPH is responsible for protecting, preserving and promoting the city’s cultural heritage. The Rio de Janeiro Cultural Heritage Circuits project aims to publicize and inform about the rich collection of cultural assets and personalities of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The plaque commemorating Renato Russo is located in the Music Circuit and aims to pay tribute to important composers of Brazilian popular music – explained the president of IRPH, Laura Di Blasi.
The Secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha, believes that the tribute is an opportunity to keep Renato Russo's story alive in the students' memories.
– We want our students to visit the place where Renato Russo lived, to become interested in his history and to learn about the immense legacy he left for Brazilian music. Five of his albums were created at this address. An enormous cultural contribution came from here and we want our children to know this history. The school we believe in goes beyond the walls, it goes through the city and society – commented Renan Ferreirinha.
The tribute also featured a performance by Alice Rachel, 14, who sang the song “Será”, immortalized by Renato Russo and Legião Urbana, in front of the building. She was accompanied by her mother Dalila Borges and by Bia Borges, 17, who played the guitar.
– Renato’s lyrics are very deep and very cool. I’m starting to get to know and like his songs – said Rachel, who is a student at the Alexandre Farah Municipal School, in Ricardo de Albuquerque, North Zone. She was a semi-finalist on the program The Voice Kids (TV Globo) this year.
