City Hall inaugurates new wards at Cardoso Fontes Hospital.

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall and the Federal Government inaugurated the new adult wards at the Cardoso Fontes Hospital in Jacarepaguá, in the West Zone, on Tuesday (June 30). Located on the second floor of the unit, the new sector has 21 beds distributed in ten rooms, expanding the capacity for care in clinical and surgical specialties. The delivery represents another step in the restructuring of the hospital, resulting from the partnership between the Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS) and the Ministry of Health. The inauguration was attended by Minister Alexandre Padilha and Secretary Rodrigo Prado.

– This delivery is fundamental for us to continue advancing in the expansion of beds at the Cardoso Fontes Hospital and the network as a whole. The space of the new wards previously housed the hospital's kitchen, which detracted from the comfort of patients, and it didn't even have air conditioning. The kitchen was moved to another location and the environment was completely redesigned and air-conditioned, allowing the opening of the new sector. On average, there will be 100 hospitalizations per month for highly complex diseases, such as cancer patients, who will have more comfort and safety during treatment – ​​says the municipal health secretary.

The facilities have been completely modernized and redesigned, combining state-of-the-art infrastructure with an environment planned for the comfort of patients and healthcare professionals. In addition to the wards, the new wing includes rest rooms, medical meeting rooms, medication preparation rooms, a nursing station, and an administrative area. The expectation is that the space will handle approximately 100 admissions per month.

– This is another step completed in the rehabilitation of federal hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. It is a joy to return here after the inauguration of the Jacarepaguá Emergency Care Center and to know that 300 people are being treated daily, the two CT scanners and the entire pediatric wing are fully operational. We will continue carrying out the reform of the nursing and structural aspects of the Cardoso Fontes Hospital, and the new beds will allow for dignified hospitalizations for patients and their companions – highlights Minister Alexandre Padilha.

Partnership between City Hall and Federal Government expands network capacity.

The Cardoso Fontes Hospital has made significant progress since the beginning of the Rio de Janeiro City Hall's administration. Beds have been reopened and services that had been inoperative for years have resumed operation, such as the pediatric ICU and operating rooms. In 2026, the unit gained a new emergency room, the CER Jacarepaguá, and a modern imaging center, with a CT scanner equipped to treat obese patients.

In the first five months of this year, the hospital performed over 216 outpatient procedures, 91 examinations, 3.360 hospitalizations, and 1.670 surgeries. The bed occupancy rate increased from 63% in 2024 to 98% in 2025.

The delivery of the new wards is part of the restructuring plan for the Cardoso Fontes and Andaraí hospitals, developed in partnership between the Ministry of Health and the Municipal Health Department. At the Andaraí Hospital, the improvements include the reopening of the emergency room, the Andaraí Emergency Care Center (CER), and the Burn Treatment Center (CTQ), one of the largest in the country, in addition to the inauguration of a new trauma unit in March of this year. The restructuring of the Cardoso Fontes Hospital expands the offer of specialized services of the Unified Health System (SUS) in the municipality and reinforces care for the population of Jacarepaguá and the entire West Zone.
