- City Hall inaugurates slope containment works on Rua do Café, in the Vasco da Gama neighborhood

The execution was carried out by Geo-Rio, an agency linked to the Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat, which built a protective wall using the soil staple technique in the slope area. Approximately R$6,2 million was invested in the site.
Anderson Marins, president of the Geo-Rio Foundation, explained what was done at the site and stated that there is no longer any risk to the population:
– The work here began after a major landslide in December 2023, affecting homes and access points for residents. There were more landslides after the rain in January and we had to carry out a series of interventions. Today, all risks on the slope are mitigated thanks to the drainage work we carried out here.
The Secretary of Government Coordination, Edson Menezes, highlighted the importance of the work:
– Geo-Rio built this retaining wall here, using a soil-stapled technique in the ravine area. It is an important project that has benefited almost a thousand residents who were living under imminent risk of falling, with risk to their lives. And that will no longer happen.
Ligia Vieira dos Santos, a resident of the Café community for six years, had her house hit by landslides. She recalled her fear during the rains:
– The gate was blocked. I couldn’t leave the house. I only managed to get help from friends, who removed the rubble. My house was at risk of collapsing, but now, with this containment work, I can only be thankful.
In addition to the containment works, the City of Rio continues to carry out monitoring and geotechnical studies in several areas of the city, with the aim of increasing protection for the population and minimizing the impacts of extreme weather events. Through the Geo-Rio Foundation, more than 260 works to mitigate geotechnical risks and contain slopes have been carried out since 2021, with investments of approximately R$308 million.
New deliveries are scheduled for the coming months. Fifty projects are under construction and another ten are in the bidding phase. Communities such as Rocinha, Vidigal, Morro do Engenho and Morro da Pedreira have benefited, as have the neighborhoods of Santa Teresa, Praça Seca and Guadalupe, and busy roads such as Avenida Niemeyer and Estrada Grajaú-Jacarepaguá.
