- City government begins implementing new bike lanes in three areas of the city.
Cycle route in the center of Rio - Alexandre Macieira / Rio City Hall The Rio de Janeiro City Hall is moving forward with its plan to expand the cycling network and its goal of 50 kilometers of new routes by 2028. Starting this Sunday (April 12), teams from CET-Rio and the Secretariat of Conservation will begin implementing new sections in the North and South Zones, connecting neighborhoods and expanding the infrastructure for cyclists.
In Tijuca, the intervention will take place on Rua Conde de Bonfim, in the section between Praça Saens Peña and Rua Uruguai, with a route along the central reservation. In Botafogo, the bike path will be implemented on Rua Muniz Barreto, between Rua Pinheiro Machado and Rua São Clemente, positioned on the left edge, maintaining parking along the street. On the Glória–Cinelândia axis, the works will take place on Rua Augusto Severo, creating a direct link between the two neighborhoods. The three projects are expected to be completed in 90 days.
— The implementation of these new sections is part of a consistent plan to expand the cycle path network, with an investment of R$ 20 million and a goal of 50 kilometers of new routes by 2028. We are advancing simultaneously in infrastructure and traffic regulations, delivering new sections that connect neighborhoods and regions. We want the residents of Rio who choose to cycle to feel safe both in terms of regulations and on the asphalt — emphasizes Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.
Expansion of the cycle path network until 2028
The works carried out this Sunday are part of a broader sustainable mobility plan. The City Hall announced the expansion of the cycle path network by 50 kilometers by 2028, focusing on connecting neighborhoods, leisure areas, public facilities and public transport systems.
The plan includes new road sections and the upgrading of existing signage, with key areas in the city center, South Zone, Tijuca, and North Zone. In total, dozens of roads are included in all regions of the city — from the historic center to the West Zone, passing through Barra da Tijuca, São Cristóvão, and Ilha do Governador.
Among the new planned projects are routes such as Avenida Pedro II (São Cristóvão), Rua Barão da Torre (Ipanema), Avenida Henrique Dodsworth (Copacabana), Rua Sacadura Cabral (Gamboa), and Avenida Dom Hélder Câmara (Del Castilho), among others. The total investment for the expansion of the cycle path network is R$ 20 million.
— We are working in partnership with CET-Rio to ensure that each intervention is carried out with quality and integrated into the set of measures that the City Hall is adopting to organize and improve mobility in Rio. These three new sections in Tijuca, Botafogo and the Glória–Cinelândia axis are another step in this direction — said the Secretary of Conservation, Diego Vaz.
The start dates for construction may be changed in case of rain.
