The Rio de Janeiro City Hall began construction this Friday (September 4th) on the new headquarters for the Unidos da Tijuca Samba School in Gamboa, Port Region. With an investment of R$11,3 million, the construction will occupy a plot of approximately 2,500 square meters on Rua Rivadávia Corrêa, near Cidade do Samba. The works are expected to be completed in the first half of 2027.
"We are here today celebrating the dream of Unidos da Tijuca owning its own home," celebrated Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, highlighting the city hall's commitment to always investing in Rio's Carnival.
"We have the resources to invest in health, education, infrastructure, and mobility because we have the management. And we also have to invest in culture. We are saying clearly here: this city hall has always invested in Carnival, will continue to invest, and we will not stop here," he stated, recalling that Carnival is a cultural manifestation that generates employment, income, and economic activity, but above all, it generates a sense of community in the city.
Alongside Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, the president of Unidos da Tijuca, Fernando Horta, made a point of demonstrating his gratitude for the start of construction on the new venue, after almost 30 years of waiting and rehearsals in borrowed locations.
"It's been a struggle for years. We've always been in makeshift locations. The school has a great deal to be grateful for. We will be eternally grateful to the city hall," Horta stated.
Undertaken by the Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat, the project will expand the structure of the Tijuca samba school and create a space for the group to hold rehearsals, cultural events, and community activities throughout the year. The new venue will have, on the ground floor, a covered area for events, a stage, a drum storage area, a dressing room, and an open patio, as well as a shop, ticket office, three bars, a kitchen, and a medical post with exclusive access for ambulances. The space will also include restrooms for women, men, and people with disabilities, and an elevator.
On the upper floor, there will be a mezzanine with a VIP area, administrative area, restrooms, an open terrace, and a bar. The structure was designed to accommodate the public with accessibility, safety, and comfort.
The new venue represents an important reinforcement for the school's structure and for the Carnival production chain. In addition to serving the activities of Unidos da Tijuca, the space can contribute to job and income generation and to the appreciation of professionals involved in cultural production.
"We have a really great project here, with accessibility features, restrooms, shops, and a state-of-the-art sports court, meeting all safety requirements," explained Rio's Secretary of Infrastructure, Wanderson dos Santos.
