The new community square will be next to the Vizinha Faladeira samba school court - Rafael Catarcione/City Hall of Rio Rio de Janeiro City Hall began construction on a new leisure area in Morro da Providência, in the Port Region, this Thursday (27/10). The community's new square will be located on the corner of Nabuco de Freitas and Marquês de Sapucaí streets, next to the Vizinha Faladeira samba school's court. The construction costs R$885 and the space is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023.
In addition to providing a living space for residents, the surrounding area will be redeveloped and a multi-sports court, a kiosk, bathrooms, street furniture will be built and equipment for a senior citizens' gym will be installed.
The president of the Companhia Carioca de Parcerias e Investimentos (CCPar), Gustavo Guerrante, explained that the project plays a fundamental role in integrating the population with the city's public spaces:
– This area is entirely designed for residents of Providência. The goal of this project is to improve and transform this space into a place for people to socialize and meet. It will be a square where children can play sports, with equipment for the elderly and infrastructure including bathrooms.
The deputy mayor of the Center, Leonardo Pavão, highlighted the importance of actions like this for residents, and the continuity of work in partnership with the traditional Vizinha Faladeira that has been going on since 2016.
– It is very important to continue the actions we have implemented here in the city center. The partnership with Vizinha Faladeira dates back a long time, from the previous administration of Mayor Eduardo Paes. It is the first samba school in Brazil and is of enormous importance to samba and the culture of our city. This is yet another facility that the City of Rio is delivering to Providência, for the well-being of the community.
The winning company in the bidding process was RJL2, which has been working on surveys at the site since the beginning of the week. Priority will be given to hiring the 25 employees who will work on the project for residents of the community itself.
