City Hall promotes actions to support the 21st LGBTI+ Parade in Madureira, on Sunday (1/12) - Disclosure

The Rio City Hall has prepared a special action to support the 21st edition of the LGBTI+ Parade in Madureira, which will be held this Sunday (1/12) on Estrada do Portela, between Avenida Ministro Edgar Romero and Rua Américo Brasiliense. The gathering, scheduled to start at 10 am, will be in front of the Império Serrano samba school’s court. The parade will begin at 13 pm, with performances by DJs and the Império Serrano and Portela samba drummers. The closing will be at the Madureira blue and white samba school’s court, with a show by singer Sandra de Sá.

The event is organized by the MGTT group, and this year it will be artistically directed by carnival designer Milton Cunha, who is also the group's vice president. Teams from the Sexual Diversity Coordination Office (CDS-Rio), the Municipal Health and Social Welfare Departments, CET-Rio, Comlurb and the Municipal Guard will be on standby at the location from 6 am, providing support for the event, which will also be monitored by the Rio Operations Center (COR).

– The Madureira Pride Parade, especially now with the artistic direction of Milton Cunha, is very important for the LGBTI+ movement in Rio de Janeiro. It is also an opportunity to remind us of Law 2.475, which prohibits prejudice and discrimination in commercial establishments and municipal agencies. Historically, Pride Parades have always marked the fight for civil rights. And we, as the City of Rio, are taking advantage of the occasion to bring municipal services to the population that will be at the event – said Carlos Tufvesson, coordinator of Sexual Diversity, a department linked to the Civil House.

Vaccination, testing and condom distribution

The Municipal Health Department will be present at the LGBTI+ Parade to provide guidance to the public on health and respect for diversity. With the slogan “Rio Without Prejudice”, and in partnership with the Sexual Diversity Coordination Office of the Rio City Hall, the SMS will have two stands set up on Avenida Ministro Edgard Romero, in front of number 81, from 9 am to 14:30 pm, where health professionals will be available to answer questions.

In the space, there will be distribution of condoms, lubricating gel, educational materials on sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

In addition, professionals will offer health guidance on smoking control, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, health of the black population, encouraging regular physical activity and adequate nutrition for a healthier lifestyle.

Vaccinations for hepatitis B, HPV, COVID-19, influenza and tetanus will also be available. VanBora!, a van with a health team that circulates in the main points of agglomeration, will be present to offer tests on site.

The Network of Adolescents and Young Health Promoters (RAP da Saúde) will approach the public by carrying out awareness-raising work on health and responsible sexual life. Technicians from the Sexual Diversity Coordination will take advantage of the opportunity of the event to provide information on legislation on the rights of the LGBTI+ community and on the services provided by the City Hall, in addition to serving the population and receiving complaints.

Representatives of the Garupa Project, a partnership between the SMS and the Municipal Secretariat of Social Assistance (SMAS), responsible for promoting access to health for transvestites and transsexuals and which welcomes and refers citizens in conditions of greater vulnerability to social protection, will also be on site, providing information to anyone interested in participating in the project.
