- The city government is carrying out works on Morro do Adeus to improve mobility and pedestrian safety.
Interventions include staircase restoration, sidewalk construction, and installation of guardrails. Photo: Press Release The Rio de Janeiro City Hall is carrying out urban infrastructure works at three important points in Morro do Adeus, in the Complexo do Alemão, to make pedestrian circulation safer, improve mobility, and reduce the risk of accidents for those who live in or pass through the areas. The services are being carried out by the Municipal Housing Secretariat, with monitoring by the Subprefecture of Large Complexes.
The works include paving and restoring the supporting structures of the staircase, building sidewalks, installing guardrails, and improving drainage, benefiting residents who use these access points daily.
— Urban improvements guarantee greater safety, accessibility, and quality of life for residents. These interventions make commuting safer for children, the elderly, and workers — highlights the Municipal Secretary of Housing, Claudio Dutra.
The work is concentrated on Arapá Street, Engenheiro Manoel Segurado Street, and Aquiri Street.
The deputy mayor for the Large Complexes and president of the Municipal Council of Favelas, Marlí Peçanha, emphasizes that the interventions are the result of ongoing work listening to the population.
— Those who live in the area are intimately familiar with the daily challenges. Therefore, the presence of the city government and ongoing dialogue with residents are essential to transforming demands into projects that facilitate and protect the lives of those who travel along these roads.
On Rua Arapá, one of the main access roads to Estrada do Itararé, a sidewalk with a guardrail was installed to increase pedestrian safety. The area also received additional curbs, repairs to an existing wall, and a new coat of paint.
Mr. Emilson Ramalho, 54, who was born and has always lived on Rua Arapá, celebrates the arrival of services in Morro do Adeus and says he feels more at ease.
"This work on Rua Arapá turned out excellent. Now we feel safer because there's a sidewalk with a curb and handrail, preventing the risk of being run over or even falling," he says.
On the staircase located between Pedro Avelino and Engenheiro Manoel Segurado streets, the City Hall is finalizing the concrete paving and the restoration of the supporting structures. A guardrail and a drainage channel are also being installed to channel rainwater into the drainage system, reducing the risk of flooding and improving the area's upkeep.
A resident of Rua Pedro Avelino, 59-year-old Vera Lúcia, who arrived at Morro do Adeus as a young girl of 12, says she uses the stairs almost every day and praises the revitalization.
"Now it's much better. It really needed some attention because part of it collapsed and the handrail fell. This shortcut is important because, in addition to making it easier to access bus stops, the Family Clinic, the market, and shops, we also have to walk in the shade," she said.
In another section of the community, on Aquiri Street, a sidewalk with a guardrail and a staircase providing access to Joana Fontoura Street, located in the lower part of the community, is being built. This new connection will facilitate residents' travel towards Uranos Street and the train station.
Student Ágata de Lima, who has lived in the community since 2017, says that building a sidewalk with a handrail where there was only dirt prevents accidents, especially for children, because it is a sloping street with a hillside alongside.
These improvements complement the new sports, leisure, and community area inaugurated by the City Hall in April of this year in Morro do Adeus. The space offers options for people of all ages, with a multi-sports court, a senior citizens' fitness area, a children's playground, and a music plaza, expanding municipal investments in the well-being of the community.
