The first brewery on the newly created Rua da Cerveja, in the city center, opens its doors

With the opening of the first brewery, Vírus Bier, the revitalization project was launched, transforming Rua da Carioca, in the city center, into the city's newest tourist and gastronomic hub: Rua da Cerveja. In the atmosphere of a traditional bar, the brewery, which operates at number 55, began the changes to the iconic address, which already has nine registered projects, which should be opened in the coming months. The goal is to make Rua da Carioca the new beer hotspot in Rio.

The new space combines craft beer production with sustainable practices, with its own labels. In addition to the classic IPA, Pilsen and Red beers, the menu at the new establishment offers a variety of bar snacks. In the first few months, the brewery will be open from Thursday to Saturday. Gradually, the days and hours of operation will be extended.

The Rua da Cerveja project is part of the Reviver Centro program, run by the City of Rio, which seeks to revitalize the city center by stimulating local commerce and occupying underutilized areas. The initiative, through the Municipal Secretariat for Urban and Economic Development (SMDUE) and in partnership with the Companhia Carioca de Parcerias e Investimentos (CCPar), emerged after a survey showed that 50% of the stores on Rua da Carioca were closed and the desire to create a beer hub in the city.

To boost the project, the city government provided financial subsidies to entrepreneurs: R$1.000 per square meter for renovations and R$75 per square meter per month for expenses, with a ceiling for properties of up to 200 square meters. The monthly payments will last for 30 to 48 months. With this strategy, the expectation is that Rua da Cerveja will generate R$222 million in four years, generate a payroll of R$41,8 million and create around 500 new jobs.

The idea is to attract more and more people to visit and live in the central region of Rio.

In addition to strengthening the economy, the project also guarantees the preservation of historical heritage, as most of the properties on Rua da Carioca are listed by the Rio Heritage Institute (IRPH) and the State Institute of Cultural Heritage (INEPAC).

Beer Street Revival Project

Reviver Rua da Cerveja, launched in 2023, received 17 brewery projects. Of this total, 13 were accredited by the program for complying with the notice. Of the 36 closed properties on Rua da Carioca, 12 registered and were qualified for the project and 10 will be occupied by the nine breweries that signed with the city government and have already received the transfer for renovation.
