First weekend of restrictions in Prainha and Grumari receives support from the population

During the first weekend of the Prainha-Grumari Restoration Operation, which includes stricter rules for access to the sanctuaries, beachgoers who arrived early at the parks were able to enjoy the intense heat in peace. Although the public cooperated, five cars were towed from the locations by the Public Order Department (SEOP) for illegal parking. A total of 89 vehicles were removed along the entire coastline of the West Zone.

The gates at Prainha and Grumari closed at 8 am on Saturday and at 8:30 am on Sunday, respecting the limit of 800 spaces on both beaches, established by CET-Rio. There was selective access control as the parks emptied throughout the day, and they reopened definitively at 15 pm.

The Prainha-Grumari Restoration Operation has no deadline and will always take place on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, says the municipal secretary of the Environment, Eduardo Cavaliere:

– Prainha and Grumari are municipal parks and require special care. There is no way we can accept that these precious places receive double or triple the number of vehicles. We will not tolerate the profusion of irregularities that have turned the experience of a leisure day into a nuisance in the recent past.

The operations involved agents from CET-Rio, Seop, the Municipal Guard, police officers from the 31st BPM (Recreio), the Municipal Department of Transportation and the Subprefectures of Barra and the West Zone. On Saturday and Sunday, the Municipal Guard issued 165 traffic fines on the coast of the West Zone, with the majority of the infractions being for illegal parking.

The president of CET-Rio, Simone Costa, highlights that the joint operation of the City Hall departments will continue:

– In addition to regulating traffic, the objective is to ensure the preservation of the environment.

In Barra de Guaratiba, there was a reduction in the number of bathers by around 50%. A blockade was set up at the main access to the beaches of Barra de Guaratiba and Pedra do Telégrafo and only residents can arrive by car, as long as they have proof of residence.

– The neighborhood really needed this control. It doesn’t have the capacity to handle so much disorder – said the president of the Barra de Guaratiba Residents’ Association, Cida de Araújo Aguiar.
