The Bosques Cariocas program, from the Municipal Secretariat of Environment and Climate (SMAC), arrived in the West Zone of the city on Monday (March 2nd). In an initiative that combined education and environmental awareness, the department delivered the Bosque Carioca Escola Municipal Professor Fábio César Pacífico, on Rua Pavão, s/n, in Campo Grande. With approximately 2,000 square meters surrounding the school, the space has 71 planted saplings of various species, including yellow ipê, purple ipê, quaresmeira, jacaranda, pitangueira and urucum, among others.

The school has over 800 students across three shifts, who will benefit from the new green space, as will their families. The initiative brings native fruit-bearing species into the school, providing shade within the wooded area and thermal comfort for students and staff in one of the largest neighborhoods in the West Zone, known for its high temperatures.

Present at the event, the Secretary of Environment and Climate, Tainá de Paula, highlighted the importance of environmental awareness:

— We have robust goals until 2028 to expand tree planting in Rio, but the biggest challenge is strengthening citizen awareness about the environment and, especially, about protecting trees. In a few years, the population will see various species of the Atlantic Forest growing in the surrounding areas.

The secretary also took the opportunity to make a call to the children: that they ask their guardians to contact one of the 1746 channels and request the planting of a tree near their home, through the Planta+Rio program.

The school's principal, Bárbara Santos, praised the opportunity to bring students together to plant seedlings, emphasizing that actions like this have an even greater impact on the school community.

— Raising awareness through practice is far more effective than raising awareness simply through images, books, or the media. When children are involved, it's much more valuable.

Carioca Woods
The Bosques Cariocas program aims to expand the city's vegetation cover and combat heat islands through denser forestation with species typical of the Atlantic Forest. Inaugurated on February 13th in an area of 3.700 square meters on Avenida São Francisco Xavier, under the Mangueira viaduct in the North Zone of Rio, the Bosque do Samba was the first project delivered by the initiative, representing the integration between the environmental agenda and cultural appreciation, using urban space as a tool to address the impacts of the climate crisis, especially in more vulnerable areas.

Plant + River
Through the Planta+Rio program, in partnership with the Parks and Gardens Foundation, SMAC plans to expand the city's street tree cover between 2025 and 2028 with native Atlantic Forest species on sidewalks, squares, and other public areas, in a project aligned with the city's Sustainable Development and Climate Action Plan (PDS). The expectation is to plant 200 seedlings by 2028.
