- Supported Employment Program completes 2 years and is celebrated with a lecture at the RJ Court of Justice
Supported Employment Program completes two years helping people with disabilities enter the job market - Rio City Hall The Supported Employment program, from the Municipal Department for People with Disabilities, will celebrate, this Wednesday (29/5), its two years of implementing a pioneering methodology that helps people with disabilities (PWD) to find a place in the job market. The event “It’s About Us, It’s About Everyone”, which will take place from 9 am to 13 pm, in the auditorium of the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro, in the Center, will explain and debate this methodology with companies, civil society, public agencies and institutions that work in the employability of PWDs and their families.
The methodology, developed in the Municipal Centers of Irajá, Mato Alto, Campo Grande, Santa Cruz and Vila Isabel, proposes the productive inclusion of people with disabilities, with support to adapt to the roles they will perform, professional training and various types of support to enter and remain in the job market. Created in the United States at the end of the 70s and provided for in article 37 of the Brazilian Inclusion Law – LBI (Law 13.146/15), the methodology is still little applied in Brazil.
The event aims to present and publicize the methodology used by the City of Rio. During the meeting, topics such as the importance of the monitoring process, the strengths of the methodology and the importance of Supported Employment Agents who carry out mediation, even after hiring, will be discussed. Companies that already use this service will also participate, and professionals with disabilities hired by them will share their experiences.
Currently, 44 companies are using this service, offered by SMPD. The Supported Employment methodology comes to the aid of companies to break down barriers and prejudices so that inclusion processes are carried out with a focus on people's potential and capabilities, and not on the characteristics of their disabilities.
– This event is of great importance to show society, companies and professionals with disabilities themselves looking for a job, that there are paths and possibilities that contribute to this process happening in a more assertive way – said Secretary Helena Werneck.
In addition to Rio, only the state of São Paulo has made this type of methodology available to the disabled population for some years.
– With this event, we also hope to inspire other municipalities and even institutions to implement it. This way, we will have more people with disabilities in the job market – said the Secretary.
People with disabilities who are interested should go in person to one of the five Municipal Centers, with their identification document, proof of address and any document that proves their disability. Insertion into the service occurs according to available vacancies.
