Sandbox.Rio Project, which regulates the environment for innovative businesses, stands out among government initiatives

The Sandbox.Rio initiative, by the City of Rio, was highlighted in a list of 35 government innovation initiatives, out of 338 listed by BrazilLab – an accelerator and innovation hub for GovTechs in Brazil and Latin America. The initiative is part of the city’s goal to make it the innovation capital of Latin America.

The data was released in the GovTech Map study, developed and released by the accelerator with support from Oracle, aiming to connect entrepreneurs to public leaders, stimulating the culture of innovation in the public sector, according to the organization.

 – The project is part of a larger goal, which is to transform Rio into the innovation capital of Latin America. By improving the business environment and providing greater legal security to those who want to innovate in the city, the project facilitates the entry of innovation here, strengthening this ecosystem. We are happy with this further recognition – said Chicão Bulhões, municipal secretary of Urban and Economic Development.

The Sandbox.Rio project offers an experimental regulatory environment for testing products, services and processes that bring innovative and technological solutions to the city and its residents. Through a call for proposals, projects that can help the city's economic development are selected, such as the use of drones for delivery and the installation of electric vehicle charging stations. The project helps reduce costs and the time it takes for innovative ideas to enter the market, facilitates obtaining financing for new projects and offers greater legal certainty.

According to its organizers, the GovTech Map is designed to present an overview of the Brazilian GovTech scenario – an ecosystem in which governments collaborate with startups and other innovation and technology agents to deliver products and services aimed at solving public problems.

Sandbox.Rio is highlighted alongside initiatives such as (011).lab, the Government Innovation Laboratory of the City of São Paulo; BNDES Garagem, a startup support initiative promoted by BNDES; Conexões para Inovação, from Petrobras, and others. For the study, 338 government initiatives were mapped, with 35 highlighted. Among the 475 startups and SMEs also mapped, there are 30 standout ventures and 55 “to keep an eye on”.
