Portuguese Wine Cellar Restaurant in São Cristóvão Receives Carioca Cultural Heritage Plaque

Adegão Português, a traditional restaurant in the Imperial neighborhood of São Cristóvão, has been officially declared a cultural heritage site of Rio de Janeiro. Mayor Eduardo Paes was at the location this Saturday (12/04), when the traditional blue plaque was affixed to celebrate the tribute and recognize the importance of the establishment for the city.

 

The mayor unveiled the commemorative plaque alongside Pablo Iglesias, one of the owners of the restaurant, and former employees of the restaurant.

 

– It is a recognition, especially for our employees. Adegão has an important history. It has been here in São Cristóvão for sixty-one years. It is the work of a lifetime -, celebrates Iglesias.

 

Founded in 1964, Adegão Português is now part of the city’s “Traditional Business Circuit”, which already includes 31 emblematic addresses.

 

The initiative is from the City of Rio, through the Rio Heritage Institute (IRPH), responsible for granting the distinction to spaces that mark the history and daily life of the city, symbolized by the traditional blue plaque affixed to the facades.

 

About to turn 61, the restaurant was created by four immigrant friends. Initially, the place operated as a steakhouse and pizzeria, but gained notoriety when it added the famous codfish fritters and generous dishes based on codfish and seafood to the menu, which won over a loyal clientele.

 

The IRPH's mission is to preserve and enhance the city's tangible and intangible heritage in order to promote the recognition of its cultural, architectural and natural assets. Through thematically-separated circuits, the locations receive informative plaques that present their stories and relevance to Rio to the public. The project currently has 24 circuits and 277 plaques installed. With this tribute, Adegão Português joins other iconic establishments in the city, such as Churrascaria Palace, in Copacabana, Rio Scenarium and Confeitaria Colombo, both in the city center.
