New York – In a decisive step towards redefining the global climate agenda, the Rio de Janeiro's city hallGlobal citizenRe:wild and local partners announced on Saturday (27/09) a five-year partnership and the launch of Rio Nature & Climate Week, the first international event to bring together cross-sectoral discussions on the interconnected crises of climate and biodiversity.

The meeting will take place in Rio de Janeiro between June 1st and 6th, 2026, putting the Global South back at the center of the dialogue on nature-based solutions to address planetary challenges.

The week-long program will combine a main agenda led by the organizers with dozens of independent sessions spread throughout the city, transforming Rio into a major platform for dialogue and action. The initiative reinforces the city's historic role since the 1992 Earth Summit, which gave rise to the UN conventions on climate and biodiversity and established international goals for the health of the planet.

Announced during the Global Citizen Festival in New York, Rio Nature & Climate Week is part of a broader strategy by the city to expand its environmental protection efforts. Rio also committed to producing 30 seedlings per year starting in 2026 and planting 80 trees by 2028, prioritizing the most vulnerable areas.

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes highlighted:

Rio is proud to play a leading role in building a sustainable future. By joining forces with Global Citizen and Re:wild, we further strengthen our city's environmental commitments and hope to inspire other cities around the world to act boldly.

Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere added:

– Rio Nature & Climate Week will be a major event for Rio de Janeiro, a city already at the forefront of sustainable and resilient solutions. The partnership with Global Citizen and Re:wild reinforces our role as an international protagonist in the face of the climate crisis.

"Global Citizen has always believed in the power of cities to lead the way on climate and sustainability. Rio's decision to join us and Re:wild reflects both its ambition and its responsibility to future generations," said Michael Sheldrick, co-founder and Director of Policy, Impact, and Government Relations at Global Citizen. "Together, we want Rio Nature & Climate Week to become a platform capable of mobilizing global leaders, local communities, businesses, and citizens around the world to act urgently in the face of the climate crisis."

"There is no viable climate solution without nature. By hosting Rio Nature & Climate Week, Rio embraces its legacy and takes bold new steps to protect the planet's most vital ecosystems," said Wes Sechrest, CEO and co-founder of Re:wild. "More than a conference, it will be a powerful call to action, placing biodiversity, Indigenous peoples, and local communities at the center of global climate strategies."

With Global Citizen at its center, Rio Nature & Climate Week positions Rio de Janeiro as a global stage for urgent action on climate and biodiversity — and as a meeting point for the Global South to shape the future of the planet.

Unlike the UN conventions on climate change (UNFCCC) and biodiversity (CBD), which address these issues separately, this meeting puts the Global South back at the forefront, advancing nature-based solutions to address both interdependent planetary crises.
