- Rio has almost 200 km of urbanized streets, including the Bairro Maravilha project.
The program has surpassed R$ 1,1 billion in investments across completed, ongoing, and tendered projects. Photo: Press Release/SMI The "Bairro Maravilha" (Wonderful Neighborhood) program, an urbanization initiative of the Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat, has already transformed more than 70 neighborhoods in the North and West zones of the city. Investments in the initiative exceed R$ 1,1 billion and have already resulted in almost 200 kilometers of urbanized roads, equivalent to the distance between Rio de Janeiro and Juiz de Fora (MG).
The interventions include the requalification of streets, roads and avenues, with the execution of drainage, paving, basic sanitation and sidewalk construction, promoting complete structural improvements in the urban space.
The largest concentration of projects is in the West Zone, which has received more than 60 completed interventions under the program. More than R$ 480 million has been invested in the requalification of streets, roads, and avenues in neighborhoods such as Bangu, Santa Cruz, and Sepetiba, among others in the region, including areas that are now part of the Southwest Zone. On Caminho do Tutóia, in Cosmos, one of the most recent roads to receive intervention, the works have improved mobility and local circulation. Seven other surrounding streets have also undergone improvements, benefiting an area of approximately 13 square meters.
In the North Zone, investments exceed R$ 150 million, with more than 10 completed projects in areas such as Bonsucesso, Encantado, Madureira, and Rocha Miranda. The most recent inauguration in the region took place in April of this year, in the Havaí and Falcão housing complexes in Pavuna. In total, 14 public spaces were improved, in addition to two squares and a multi-sports court. A fully revitalized five-a-side football field will be delivered to the public in the coming weeks.
The interventions in the Bairro Maravilha project reduce flooding points in the city, improve access to streets, and ensure greater safety for pedestrians and drivers, in addition to improving the daily commute for residents and facilitating circulation within the areas covered by the improvements.
– The "Bairro Maravilha" project brings dignity, mobility, and quality of life to the communities, with works that change the reality of the streets and the daily lives of the people – highlights the municipal Secretary of Infrastructure, Wanderson Santos.
The initiative continues with new work fronts in different regions of the city, expanding the reach of the interventions and consolidating urban infrastructure in Rio de Janeiro. In total, the program has already accounted for 1.246 completed projects throughout the municipality.
