The City of Rio, through RioLuz, has completed the modernization of the lighting in the city's 18 tunnels, as part of the Luz Maravilha program. The roads have been fitted with LED technology, which provides greater brightness, greater safety and reduced maintenance costs.

In total, 9.916 LED points were installed, illuminating more than 13 kilometers of tunnels in different regions of the city. The modernization included replacing old lights with new LED ones, as well as installing electrical conduits, cabling, controls and anti-theft protection.

The modernization process began in 2021, with the implementation of the new lighting system in the first tunnel, Zuzu Angel, and was progressively expanded until it reached the entire network of tunnels in the city.

To give you an idea, the total distance illuminated by RioLuz is equivalent to a route of approximately 13 km, the same distance between Aterro do Flamengo and Recreio dos Bandeirantes, or from Maracanã to Galeão Airport.

– The delivery of LED lighting in all of the city’s tunnels represents a historic milestone for RioLuz. It is a significant advance in technology and road safety. This achievement reinforces the company’s commitment to modernizing the city and ensuring the well-being of the population – highlights Rafael Thompson, president of RioLuz.

An interesting fact: The greater concentration of projectors at the entrance to the tunnels helps to reduce the impact of the light transition on drivers' vision. And the same happens at the exit of the tunnels with the reduction of projectors.

The Luz Maravilha program has already modernized more than 521 street lights in the city of Rio and is one of the largest public lighting modernization projects in the country. LED lighting transforms the urban landscape with more technology, efficiency and safety for the population of Rio.
