With Sambódromo illuminated, key to the city is handed over to health professionals

In a year marked by the absence of the traditional Rio Carnival festivities, the City of Rio, through Riotur, inaugurated, this Friday (12/02), the special lighting of the Sambadrome. Until Saturday (20/02), when the Parade of Champions would be held, Marquês de Sapucaí and Apoteose will be illuminated every night until midnight in tribute to the victims of Covid-19 and, in particular, those from the world of samba. The lighting, every 10 seconds, resembles the colors of each of Rio's samba schools.

As tradition dictates, on the Friday before the start of the festivities, the mayor hands over the key to the city to King Momo. This time, due to the pandemic, King Momo passed the relic to the mayor, who then handed it over to two professionals from the Municipal Health Network who are participating in the fight against Covid-19: nurse Adélia Maria dos Santos, responsible for administering one of the first doses of the coronavirus vaccine in Rio, and Joelma Andrade, a former dancer from Unidos da Ilha and a nursing technician in the municipality.

– There will be no carnival because we want to save lives. There will be no carnival because we need to preserve lives. There will be no carnival because those we love and even those we don’t know cannot be exposed to this disease that, unfortunately, has killed a huge number of people around the world. This is also a tribute to all those lives lost – declared the mayor.

He reinforced the appeal for the population to avoid crowds.

– In the next few days, we will not go to parties or parade in groups. We will enjoy Carnival in a different way. I want to make my promise, my commitment here before King Momo: in 2022, we will have the biggest Carnival in history. We will have an unforgettable celebration, to make up for this year – he highlighted.

 

The ceremony was attended by the vice-mayor Nilton Caldeira, the president of Riotur, Daniela Maia, the municipal secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz, the president of Rioluz, Bruno Bonetti, the municipal secretary of Conservation, Anna Laura Secco, the deputy mayor of the Center of Rio, Leonardo Pavão, family members of Candonga, and the president of Liesa, Jorge Castanheira.

Logistics plan to combat crowds

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall has put together a logistical action plan to combat crowds during the Carnival period. The special inspection scheme began this Friday (February 12) and will continue until 02 am on the 6nd. The plan includes blockades at strategic access points to the city, special actions by the Municipal Guard to prevent groups, and convoys integrated by the Municipal Department of Public Order (Seop), the Health Surveillance Institute (Ivisa) and the support of the Military Police, among other agencies.

In addition to the preliminary survey carried out by SEOP, the work of the teams on the streets will be supported by 24-hour camera monitoring by the Rio Operations Center (COR). Anyone who fails to comply with the rules (individuals and legal entities) is subject to fines for health violations, such as crowding and failure to wear a mask, and closure.

Websites that promote paid parties are also being tracked and will be notified and held accountable if the events occur. Carnival groups or groups that fail to comply with the rules will automatically be disqualified from Carnival 2022. In addition, sound equipment and cars will be seized and secured.

 

Covid-19: high risk classification, but waiting list for beds is zero

Rio de Janeiro City Hall released its 12.02th Covid-6 Epidemiological Bulletin on Friday (February 19). The report showed that, for the fourth consecutive week, the state capital remains in the high-risk category. However, the waiting list for beds, which at the beginning of January was 150 people, has been eliminated.

Rio de Janeiro is the city in the state that has vaccinated the most against Covid-19, with an average waiting time for the vaccine to be administered of less than 15 minutes. As of this Friday, 224.389 doses have been administered in the city, which corresponds to 3,33% of the population.
