The Municipal Secretariat for Persons with Disabilities (SMPD), in partnership with MetrôRio's Diversity Center, conducted a simultaneous awareness campaign against ableism at five subway stations: Irajá, Maracanã, Central, São Conrado, and Jardim Oceânico. The campaign aimed to provide information and guidance on the issue to public transportation users.

Representatives from the SMPD, including users, family members, and professionals, were present at the selected locations. The public received materials produced by the Plain Language teams of the Municipal Reference Centers for Persons with Disabilities (CMRPDs), as well as content developed in partnership with Fiocruz.

According to Undersecretary Heloísa Rocha, combating ableism depends, above all, on awareness.

– This is an opportunity to reflect on the barriers that still persist in our society and reaffirm that people with disabilities are subjects of rights, protagonists of their own stories.

September marks National Day of Struggle for Persons with Disabilities, celebrated on September 21st, and reinforces the importance of actions that increase visibility on the issue. For the SMPD, campaigns like today's help deconstruct stereotypes, combat prejudice, and value human diversity.

In addition to highlighting that disability is just a characteristic, not a limitation, the ministry emphasized that full inclusion is only possible with the elimination of physical, communicational and attitudinal barriers.
