  • Shakira attracts 2 million people to Copacabana: impact on the city's economy and tourism.
Event expected to boost Rio's economy by R$800 million - Marcos de Paula / Rio City Hall

A huge crowd filled the sands of Copacabana beach this Saturday (May 2nd) for the show by Colombian singer Shakira. According to Riotur, there were 2 million people in attendance. After Madonna and Lady Gaga, it was Shakira's turn to bring the biggest show of her career to the stage set up in front of the Copacabana Palace. The performance was part of the third edition of "Todo Mundo no Rio" (Everyone in Rio), already incorporated into the city's official calendar, with events planned until at least 2028.

A drone show opened the night on Copacabana Beach, painting an imposing wolf in the sky, a symbol of Shakira's strength and identity, seemingly welcoming the artist. Soon after, she appeared on stage dressed in the colors of Brazil, eliciting a collective cheer from the crowd that filled the sands.

Visibly emotional in front of the crowd, Shakira made a point of speaking in Portuguese and reminisced about her journey with the country:

Hello, Brazil, how are you all doing? To think I arrived here at 18, dreaming of singing for you… and ended up falling in love with you. Brazil, I love you. It's magical to see millions of souls together, ready to sing, to feel, to dance, and to remind the world of what's truly important.

In one of the most memorable moments of the opening, the singer dedicated the show to women, reinforcing a message of strength and unity:

– We women, every time we fall, we rise wiser, stronger, and more resilient. Women no longer cry. That's why this show is for all of us. Alone we may be more vulnerable, but together we are invincible.

The show also featured Brazilian singers. Anitta, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, and Ivete Sangalo shared the stage with the Latin star and delighted the audience.

The event is expected to generate around R$ 800 million for the Rio de Janeiro economy, according to a study by the Municipal Secretariat of Economic Development (SMDE) in partnership with Riotur, impacting sectors such as hotels, restaurants, transportation, and commerce.

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall mobilized its agencies in an integrated operation to guarantee security, logistics, and public service. The Operations and Resilience Center (COR-Rio) operated at maximum capacity throughout the entire program.

Everyone in Rio boosts tourism and revenue in May.

The “Everyone in Rio” event has boosted tourism in May, historically considered the low season in the city. Data from the Rio Tourism Observatory (SMTUR-Rio) shows an increase in the number of visitors in years with shows in Copacabana. In 2024, the growth during the Labor Day holiday was 34,2% compared to the previous year. In 2025, the increase was 90,5% compared to 2023.
