Super Centro Carioca de Cirurgia celebrates its third anniversary with over 61 procedures.

The Super Centro Carioca de Cirurgia (SCCC), run by the Rio de Janeiro City Hall and located at the Ronaldo Gazolla Municipal Hospital, celebrates its third anniversary this Tuesday (July 7th), consolidating itself as one of the leading surgical centers in the country. Since its inauguration in 2023 until May of this year, more than 61,500 surgeries have been performed, with hernioplasty, gallbladder removal, and vasectomy being the most requested procedures. The unit, which is part of a Federal Government program to expand the availability of surgeries in the SUS (Brazilian Public Health System), has a direct impact on reducing waiting lists in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The center was created with an investment of over R$ 123 million, including structural renovations, expansion of the physical area, and acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment. Today, the SCCC operates with 13 operating rooms – nine of them equipped for video surgeries – in a total area of 930m². In addition to the main surgical block, the SCCC houses the Surgical Specialties Center, focused on consultations and minor procedures, further expanding the reach and effectiveness of care.
– The Super Centro Carioca de Cirurgia is an example of how consistent investments in infrastructure, technology, and public management can transform and expand access to healthcare. With the increased surgical capacity of the network, we are able to offer faster service to the population of Rio – says the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Health Secretary, Rodrigo Prado, who reaffirms the importance of the unit within the national program to reduce surgical waiting lists.
Today, the Ronaldo Gazolla Hospital is the largest provider of surgical services in the municipal network, performing procedures such as hernioplasty, cholecystectomy, vasectomy, videolaparoscopic surgery, varicocele treatment, hydrocele treatment, circumcision, sclerotherapy, hemorrhoidectomy, thyroidectomy, lithotripsy, video-assisted tubal ligation, and fissure and fistula repair.
Among the thousands of people who have benefited from the expansion of surgical capacity at the Ronaldo Gazolla Hospital is Andréia Tavares, 54, a resident of Guadalupe. After being referred for surgery, she says the process was faster than she expected.
"It didn't take long, it was faster than I imagined. I received excellent care from the beginning, they provided full support with the exams and the surgical risk assessment. I can only express my gratitude for the care and attention I received at the hospital," says Andréia, who underwent gallbladder surgery.
The hospital's structure also includes a robust outpatient complex, divided into five centers (medical, rehabilitation, endoscopy, cardiology, and imaging), and the largest Healthcare Monitoring Center in the country, which monitors the vital signs of patients in real time across the more than 420 available beds.
The Super Centro Carioca de Cirurgia represents a concrete step forward in the transformation of public health in Rio de Janeiro: high capacity, modern and efficient technology, in addition to a commitment to universal and rapid access to surgical procedures through the SUS (Brazilian Public Health System).
