The Providência cable car reaches the milestone of 4 million passengers after resuming operations.

The Providência Cable Car reached the milestone of 4 million passengers transported this Tuesday, September 1st, since the resumption of full operation on February 9th, 2025. The municipal transport, which is free for residents of Morro da Providência and visitors, also registered a record of 12.645 users in a single day on June 5th of this year. These milestones reinforce the importance of this transport as an alternative for residents of the region, facilitating travel and access to the city center. The system is managed by the Rio Providência Consortium, with investments from the Rio de Janeiro City Hall and management and oversight of the concession contract carried out by the Companhia Carioca de Parcerias e Investimentos (CCPar).

– We achieved a significant milestone in such a short time because it's a free transportation service that operates every day of the week, including Sundays and holidays, and with extended hours on weekdays. It has become part of residents' routine, facilitating their commute and improving the quality of life for those who need to work, study, and those with mobility difficulties, as well as expanding access for visitors. It demonstrates that investments in infrastructure and partnerships can generate concrete results for the city and, especially, for those who use public transportation daily – stated the Municipal Secretary of Economic Development, Osmar Lima.

 

History

Inaugurated in July 2014, the Providência Cable Car was built as part of the Morar Carioca program, with an investment of R$ 75 million through the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC). Service was interrupted in 2017 and underwent a comprehensive recovery process, initiated in 2021 and coordinated by CCPar. The modernization works included the renovation of the three stations, the restoration of the metal towers, and the updating of the electromechanical system. In total, the Rio de Janeiro City Hall invested R$ 42 million in the recovery and modernization of the equipment.
