Photo: Disclosure/SMEL The third edition of the Zico/Rio de Janeiro City Hall Super Cup begins this Saturday (August 02nd) at 08 a.m. at the Vila Olímpica Radialista “Apolinho” Washington Rodrigues in Gamboa. The innovative project, in partnership with the city, will bring soccer competitions to areas where young talents have few opportunities, completely free of charge, until June 9.
The last edition, which concluded in May 2025, featured five super champions. Futuro Feliz FC won the under-11 competition, Turiashow the under-13 competition, Nova Era United the under-15 competition, Jovem do Amanhã the under-17 competition, and Garotas Amam Futebol won the under-18 women's competition.
"The first two editions of the Zico/Rio de Janeiro City Hall Super Cup were a success, and we hope to repeat that in this third edition. Zico is an idol, and this initiative provides an incredible opportunity for those who dream of becoming a professional soccer player. We also have two women's tournaments, further reinforcing our commitment to women's soccer. Another new development is that we will have a tournament at Parque Oeste, which opened last year and has a perfect field ready to welcome the kids," said Sports Secretary Guilherme Schleder.
The competition will feature 12 stages, two of which will be exclusively for women, and the final one will be held at the Zico Football Center in Recreio dos Bandeirantes. Ten will be held in eight Olympic Villages (Radio Host "Apolinho" Washington Rodrigues, Caju, Encantado, Nilton Santos, Carlos Roberto de Oliveira – Dicró, Councilor Jorginho of SOS, Clara Nunes, Dr. Sócrates Brasileiro), and one at Parque Oeste, a new addition to the tournament. The 12th will be held in 2026 at the CFZ, with the champions of the first 11 stages in attendance.
"It's really cool to renew the partnership with Rio de Janeiro City Hall for another Super Copa Zico circuit. In the last circuit, many young players were taken to major clubs for evaluation. We know the ultimate goal is inclusion and socialization, but of course, we have to keep an eye on talent that often lacks opportunities. Because we hold the events within the Olympic Villages in Rio de Janeiro, we often go where a club's recruitment department doesn't, providing opportunities. And in all other cases, we will certainly provide a fun competitive experience, with all the virtues that sport offers," said Zico, former athlete and creator of the project.
The Zico Cup began in 2008, an idea from Flamengo's great idol, with a clear objective: to give opportunities to new talents, but, most importantly, to integrate different classes of young football enthusiasts.
