Gentileza Intermodal Terminal completes one year of operation and reaches 14 million trips

The Gentileza Intermodal Terminal completed one year of operation this Monday (24/02). The largest public transport integrator in the capital of Rio de Janeiro reached the milestone of 14 million trips completed since its inauguration. The Terminal connects the services of the BRT Transbrasil, lines 1 and 4 of the Light Rail Vehicle (VLT) and 27 municipal bus lines.

– The Gentileza Terminal completes one year with 14 million trips. Thousands of Rio residents are benefiting, as they spend less time on public transportation. The TIG has given citizens more dignity and revitalized the downtown area. New residents are arriving in the neighborhood and are enjoying the wide range of mobility options, through the BRT, buses and the VLT Carioca. All of this in an integrated manner – celebrates Rio’s vice-mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere.

The Gentileza Terminal transformed the area near the Novo Rio bus station. The works were carried out in an area of ​​77 thousand square meters that the municipal government purchased from Caixa for R$40,8 million. The investment in the construction was close to R$300 million through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) of the VLT do Centro, with R$257,8 million financed by Banco do Brasil for the restructuring of the BRT system.

The Gentileza Terminal has two floors. The ground floor is dedicated to the arrival of all modes of transport. On the upper floor, there are ticket offices, restrooms, around 80 shops and the waiting room for the special Gentileza Terminal/Galeão International Airport (GIG) service. The terminal is fully accessible. There are three walkways (Bus Station, São Cristóvão Street and Avenida Brasil) and another access via Avenida Francisco Bicalho.

With the construction of the Terminal, the VLT was expanded. Line 1, which starts at Santos Dumont Airport, gained an additional section to reach the terminal, and Line 4 was also created to connect with Praça XV, where the ferry terminal is located. The Gentileza also connects buses and the BRT Transbrasil.

The inauguration of the Gentileza Terminal also allowed for the full operation of Transbrasil, a corridor installed on Avenida Brasil consisting of 18 stations and two terminals, connecting Deodoro, in the West Zone, to the Center of Rio, in the Port Region, near the Rio Bus Station. The total route is 26 kilometers, and it is estimated that up to 250 thousand people will be transported daily, by 2030. Transbrasil connects with municipal bus lines, VLT (Gentileza Terminal), Transolímpica (Deodoro Terminal) and Transcarioca (Penha and Fundão).

The inauguration of Transbrasil resulted in an average reduction of 50 minutes or 32% in the total travel time for those traveling between Campo Grande and Candelária, for example. The travel time from Deodoro to Gentileza Terminal was reduced from 1h30 to approximately 40 minutes. According to a satisfaction survey conducted by Atlas Intel, the terminal's customer approval rating is 94.4%.

Kindness x Galleon
To meet the demand of passengers using Tom Jobim International Airport (Galeão), an express TIG x GIG executive bus line, without stops at stations, operates from 6 am to midnight, with scheduled intervals of 20 minutes. The journey time of the line is approximately 25 minutes. The fare is R$15.

Prophet Kindness
The name and design of the terminal are a reference to José Datrino, the Prophet of Kindness, known for the inscriptions he immortalized on the columns of the Gasômetro and Perimetral viaducts. The most famous of these is the phrase “Kindness generates Kindness”, which forms the visual identity of the Gentileza Terminal.

Olympic Legacy
The terminal is part of the legacy of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. During the construction, the terminal received metal structures that were reused from the International Broadcast Center built in the Olympic Park. The site received more than ten thousand press professionals who worked in the building where the studios were located and the images for the official broadcasts were generated.

URBAN ART
Transbrasil also gained the largest urban art corridor in Latin America. Cores da Brasil brought together the inspiration, creativity and unique techniques of more than 13 artists. Art in the form of paintings colors terminals, stations and walkways from the BRT Transbrasil to the Gentileza terminal. In addition, 35 viaducts and more than 300 support pillars also received urban art. More than 30 thousand liters of paint and more than 10 thousand spray cans were used.

Wonder Light
RioLuz carried out interventions in the terminal area and surrounding area. In the Gasômetro, 55 LED lights were installed, as part of the Luz Maravilha program to modernize the city's public lighting. In the area surrounding the terminal, 78 lights and 35 new posts were modernized.
