Cleaning, painting, and revitalization services have begun for 11 strategic tunnels in the city. Carried out by the Department of Conservation and Public Services, these interventions are part of an ongoing program to rehabilitate tunnel infrastructure.

The initial work began in the Rebouças, Zuzu Angel, Rafael Mascarenhas, and Alaor Prata (Old Tunnel) tunnels in the South Zone. To minimize traffic impact, teams are working at night, from Sunday to Thursday, with scheduled road closures by CET-Rio between 23 PM and 5 AM.

The Paulo Marcellino, Luiz Jacques, Major Rubens Vaz, São Conrado and Joá tunnels in the South Zone; the Noel Rosa tunnel in the North Zone; and the Billy Blanco underpass in the West Zone will also receive the services.

The Rebouças Tunnel will also undergo structural interventions through a specific bidding process, including sealing joints and painting the side walls. This action will reduce the accumulation of dirt on the surfaces and improve internal visibility of the roadway.

The city's ongoing tunnel rehabilitation program began in 2023. The first tunnel to be included was the Santa Bárbara Tunnel, revitalized in 2024.
