Tourism in the city is boosted by an audience aged 60 and over.

Regarding the age profile, the Municipal Tourism Secretariat currently has data on national and state tourism for the years 2024, 2025, and the first four months of 2026. The results indicate relative stability, accompanied by a gradual increase in the participation of tourists aged 60 or older in the city's tourist flow.

Among domestic tourists, the share of this demographic increased from 14,1% in 2024 to 14,9% in 2025, remaining at 14,7% in the accumulated period from January to April 2026. Despite this proportional stability, there has been absolute growth in the number of elderly domestic tourists, which increased from approximately 1,39 million in 2024 to 1,48 million in 2025. In the first four months of 2026, the number already exceeds 515 elderly visitors. The data comes from the Rio Tourism Observatory.

"Increasingly, the city offers experiences focused on accessibility, comfort, and culture, highlighting iconic landmarks such as Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, the Botanical Garden, and Confeitaria Colombo," emphasizes Daniela Maia, the city's Secretary of Tourism.

Within the state itself, the participation of the 60+ demographic is even higher and shows a growth trajectory, increasing from 20,0% in 2024 to 21,8% in 2025 and reaching 22,5% in the partial accumulated total for 2026, even in the face of a reduction in the total volume of state visitors. The result suggests a greater presence of seniors in local tourism and intra-regional travel.

The data also show that the 60-69 age group accounts for the largest share of senior citizen tourism, while the 70-79 and 80+ age groups remain proportionally smaller, but relatively stable. A slightly higher participation of older age groups in the state's tourism flow is also observed.

Overall, the results reinforce the growing relevance of the elderly population to tourism in Rio de Janeiro, especially in the domestic and regional markets, highlighting opportunities for strengthening policies and products focused on accessibility, mobility, hospitality, leisure, and active aging.
