Winners of the Rio de Janeiro Mathematics Olympiad receive medals for the 2025 edition.

In total, 291 gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded - Press Release The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, and the municipal secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha, presented medals this Sunday (March 29th) to the students who were crowned champions of the 2025 Carioca Mathematics Olympiad (OCM). A total of 291 gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded. As a further reward, the 44 students who excelled across the entire school system traveled to the United States in January, where they visited Disney and NASA.
The awards ceremony for the winners of the 9th Regional Education Coordination was held at Parque Oeste, bringing together students, educators, and family members in a moment of recognition and celebration. There were also tributes to the schools, teachers, and teams that stood out.
Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere addressed the students, emphasizing the pride they should feel for their Olympic medal. He also highlighted the need for careful attention to education.
"These kids with medals around their necks are the reason for everything we do at the Department of Education. This is our Olympic medal, this is our work that has something very special. In the case of these children, these teenagers, these students, this work never ends. It's a living, continuous work, which demands our constant, attentive gaze."
The municipal secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha, highlighted the importance of learning as a factor for new opportunities in the future.
– I can imagine the pride it must be to have a son who is a champion in a Mathematics Olympiad. I am a product of the Mathematics Olympiad. My life was transformed by these initiatives. When I was a public school student, I won R$ 100,00 in scholarship money. From then on, I began to understand that through mathematics I could access opportunities. Studying is worthwhile.
Isabelle Vitória Carvalho Santos, 14, a 9th-grade student at the Venezuela Municipal School in Campo Grande, is among the 44 students who, in addition to a gold medal, won a trip to Disney and NASA in the United States for their performance in 2025.
"The Math Olympiad encourages students to dedicate themselves more. My friends started studying more. And the trip to the United States brought us all closer together. It was magical, unforgettable," said the teenager.
Gustavo Henrique de Souza Muna, 15 years old, had already won a gold medal in 2024, when he also won a trip to Disney. In last year's edition, he won bronze upon completing elementary school at GET Diego Matias Hypólito, in Campo Grande.
– I am very happy to have all this knowledge because mathematics can open many paths, many doors, to a beautiful and prosperous future. This competition, in addition to rewarding the best, the most studious who strive the most, also adds to knowledge. It influences those who didn't win, and even those who did, to try to win again.
The event celebrates the talent, dedication, and performance of the medal-winning students. Over the past few years, the Olympiad has established itself as a relevant educational policy of the municipal network, contributing to the strengthening of learning, the identification of new talents, and the expansion of opportunities for students.
The CMO
Created in 2021, the OCM (Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad) is a pioneering initiative in Brazilian public education networks, organized by the Municipal Department of Education in partnership with the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA). The competition aims to engage students from the 2nd to the 9th grade of elementary school, stimulate learning in mathematics, identify talent, and promote healthy competition. In five editions, the OCM has already awarded more than 250 students with trips and has had more than 1,6 million entries.
