Engenhão Knowledge Ship gains Ana Maria Gonçalves Reading Room

With the aim of encouraging the habit of reading and spreading knowledge, the Municipal Secretariat of Science and Technology (SMCT), in partnership with Editora Record, opened the Ana Maria Gonçalves Reading Room inside the Nave do Conhecimento do Engenhão, in the North Zone of Rio. The space was named in honor of the writer and author of the award-winning novel “Um Defeito de Cor”, which will be Portela's theme song for Carnival 2024.

This is the first reading room to be set up inside the Naves do Conhecimento. The new space will provide visitors with books donated by Editora Record, most of which are specialized in Afro-Brazilian literature. The idea is to encourage users of the unit to read, acquire more knowledge, and learn about relevant authors and their works.

– Libraries have been in my memory as places of freedom since childhood. There is a possibility of knowledge and expansion in them that seems inexhaustible and, therefore, irresistible. I feel very honored to give my name to this room, which I hope will be a place of inclusion and welcome, where each person can find themselves and their own story – explained the honoree Ana Maria Gonçalves, author of one of the greatest icons of Afro-Brazilian literature, the acclaimed “Um Defeito de Cor”.

Based on intense documentary research, the book tells the saga of Kehinde, a black woman who, at the age of 8, is kidnapped in the Kingdom of Dahomey, present-day Benin, and brought to be enslaved on the Island of Itaparica, in Bahia.

The Municipal Secretary of Science and Technology, Tatiana Roque, highlighted the importance of opening a space exclusively dedicated to reading within the Naves do Conhecimento.

– This is a well-deserved tribute to one of the most influential names in Brazilian literature. The Naves stand out not only as facilities that offer technological resources and training, but also as environments that foster inspiration and the flow of ideas. By encouraging reading, these centers encourage students to explore new possibilities and transform their ideas into impactful technological projects.

The creation of this new space in the Knowledge Center aims to encourage visitors to dedicate themselves to reading, providing them with the opportunity to acquire more knowledge. The idea is that the new environment will be a model for other units.
