Knowledge Ships promote innovation and digital inclusion to the Rio population

Innovation and digital inclusion centers that offer free internet access, workshops, lectures and training courses in various areas focused on future professions, the Naves do Conhecimento operate at nine locations in the North and West zones of the city, bringing learning to the population of Rio. They are multipurpose and interactive environments that encourage the search for new knowledge and the democratization of access to information through the dissemination of technological tools and the practical application of science.

The initiative, by the Municipal Department of Science and Technology, emerged in 2012, from the Praças do Conhecimento (Knowledge Squares), a complex of public services for health, education, culture and digital inclusion. The need to expand access to information technology more quickly and flexibly led to this area being separated from the parent project to form the Naves do Conhecimento (Knowledge Ships). Since then, the project has been honored with international awards.

Knowledge Ships enhance the digital experience, mainly benefiting community residents, represented by a considerable contingent of people who have never had access to a computer.

 

 

A regular visitor to the naves, Lucia Martins, 57 years old, did not have a computer at home and was able to complete her degree in Library Science at UniRio using the equipment at a unit.

– I heard about the project through a friend. Nave is very important in my life. I was able to study every day, complete my college assignments, and thanks to that, I was able to graduate. I didn’t have a computer or internet at home and I graduated in Library Science at Unirio. Without Nave, I wouldn’t be able to do my work. In fact, it was there that I did my final project. I’ve already taken several courses and, with each passing day, it gets much better. The courses are excellent, the teachers are attentive and patient, and the entire team is very dedicated – says Lucia, who is now enrolled in the Introduction to Drone Operation class at Nave do Engenhão.

The Naves do Conhecimento project encourages new forms of learning, offering free high-level courses, workshops and broadband internet access to people.

 

 

Jéssica Cassimiro is another regular at Nave do Engenhão, where she has taken courses to change her professional life:

– First, I took a Canva course to improve my online posts and then I took part in the first camera photography class at Nave Engenhão. That was how I was able to upgrade my skills as a photographer and, since then, I have been working in this new field. I invested in equipment and have been working at parties and events. In addition to earning an income, this activity is making me very happy. Nave changed my story – says Jéssica, who is currently enrolled in the Introduction to Drone Operation course.

 

 

Technological environments

Digital Reception – place where users can register, reserve computers, consult the unit’s event schedule and Multimedia Room class times, as well as make suggestions.

Lan Table – space with computers intended for free access to the internet with guidance from a user support team.

Digital Library – environment with broadband access, which allows the population to consult collections from other libraries for school research and browsing in search of knowledge.

Multimedia Room – a place for classes with computers that also supports educational activities at schools in the community.

Children area – digital caves with tablets available to visitors.

 

Activities

Among the courses, workshops and lectures on Technology, Entrepreneurship and Innovation offered to the population are: Drone Operation, ChatGPT, Typing, Digital Marketing, Introduction to 3D Printing, Introduction to Paid Traffic, Sustainable Robotics, Photo Editing with Lightroom, Photography, Cell Phone Repair and Maintenance, Senior Computing, Programming and Algorithms, Html Code, Excel Functions, E-commerce, Kids Computing, Scratch: Programming for Children, Whatsapp Marketing, Computer Operator, Computer Maintenance, Programming Logic, Excel for Selection Processes, Introduction to Excel, Programming in Python, Cell Phone Photography, Photography Fundamentals, Canva, Photoshop, Game Development, 3D Modeling with Blender, TecnoArt, among others.

 

Cooperation agreement signed between SMCT and Senai

Through a cooperation agreement signed between the secretariat and Senai, 500 places were also made available in several free professional qualification courses for students of the Naves do Conhecimento, with content aimed at insertion in the job market. Courses such as: Front-End Programmer, Mechanical Welder, Carbon Steel Welder, Computer Systems Operator, Logistics Operations Assistant, Computer Operator, among others.

Cinema Nave

In addition to courses and workshops, Naves do Conhecimento also hosts Cine Nave every month, an initiative that offers visitors the opportunity to watch well-known film productions. Admission is free and all films are rated R.

 

Other Events

The Naves also promote actions to help those who do not have access to the internet. On Digital Citizenship Day, teams help people to create resumes, register with the SUS connect, check their PIS and schedule document collection, among other activities that require a computer.
