The Municipal Department of Science and Technology, through the Naves do Conhecimento, prepared a meeting between the past, the present and the future, in celebration of the 19th National Week of Science and Technology, whose theme this year was the “Bicentennial of Independence: 200 years of science, technology and innovation in Brazil”. The event “Vaves do Conhecimento Constructing History in Science and Technology”, held at the Areninha Carioca Hermeto Pascoal, in Bangu, was attended by more than 250 people who were able to enjoy several activities. An exhibition was set up with old equipment to show what technology was like in the past. During the event, current devices were also on display to show technological evolution.

To represent the future, an interactive mini robot, virtual reality glasses and 3D printing machines performing prints throughout the event sparked the curiosity of many people. The robot welcomed visitors and was with them throughout the event, even participating in the lecture.

Students from the Naves de Irajá, Madureira, Padre Miguel, Santa Cruz, Triagem and Vila Aliança attended the exhibition and participated in the Gamer Arena with online Free Fire game competitions. Guests also had access to five arcade machines. The idea of making these machines available was to show younger people what gaming technology was like in the 80s and 90s. And to give older people the nostalgia of reliving those moments.

It was an afternoon of great emotion, learning and knowledge of how the evolution of time has contributed to technology, and consequently to everyday life. Heliana de Oliveira Benevente, 64 years old, said that she took a trip back in time.

– It was a wonderful moment to go back in time and see this equipment that was part of our lives. The younger ones certainly found it new and that is interesting. I hope we have more events like this, everything is very positive – said the student from Nave de Irajá.

The public was also able to participate in a light painting workshop (a modern photography technique) that consists of creating light trails in a photograph. To close the program, three virtual reality glasses and a mini interactive robot were raffled off. To compete, those interested had to answer the question “What will be invented in 200 years?”, with the aim of stimulating creativity and the importance of thinking about the future.

Young Leonam Max da Conceição Teixeira, 18 years old, was delighted with the possibility of getting to know so many things.

– I thought the event was really cool. Not all young people have the opportunity to go to places with science and education. For me, it was a great opportunity. I learned a lot about technology, about virtual reality glasses. I had never had the opportunity to put one of those glasses on my face and I really saw how wonderful it was. And other types of cameras that I had never had access to. I thought it was fantastic. Young people deserve to have more opportunities like this.
