  • Campaign to encourage selective collection was at the Urca street market this Friday
This Friday (August 01st), Comlurb launched a campaign to encourage selective waste collection at the open-air market in Praça Cacilda Becker, in Urca, in the South Zone. The campaign began in March 08, in highly visible locations in the North, South, Central, and West zones, with a focus on squares and beaches. Since last year, the initiatives have been concentrated in open-air markets throughout the city.

During the campaign, informative pamphlets are distributed, with technicians present to answer questions and provide guidance. Selective Waste Collection serves 117 neighborhoods in the city. All materials are delivered free of charge to 30 waste picker cooperatives, which separate and sell the products. Recyclable waste thus provides jobs and income for cooperative members, benefiting approximately 450 families.

Currently, collection at residents' doors is done once a week, on alternate days to household collection. The population can find out about the day and time of collection in each street on the page https://comlurb.prefeitura.rio/servico/coleta-seletiva/. If the street is not included, the request for inclusion can be made through the City Hall's Call Center 1746.

For the recycling cycle to be increasingly successful, it is essential that residents participate in this process, promoting the separation of waste in their homes. Comlurb ensures that all street markets in the city are cleaned, sweeping the entire area of the market and its surroundings, and cleaning with reused water. The Company asks for the collaboration of street vendors so that waste is properly stored in containers or plastic bags to facilitate the work of street cleaners and speed up the cleaning service.
